POSITION OVERVIEW AND PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

Alutiiq Essential Services, LLC is excited to offer an incredible opportunity for a dynamic Laboratory Metrologist to join our team and support the NASA Laboratory Services Contract at John C. Stennis Space Center. The Laboratory Metrologist is the first line supervisor for Metrology Technicians in their respective laboratory and provides guidance and leadership to subordinates based on organizational goals and company policy. The Laboratory Metrologist interprets, executes, and recommends modifications to organizational policies and operates with a moderate degree of independence under established policies and procedures with supervision from the Measurement Standards and Calibration Laboratory (MS&CL) Manager. The Laboratory Metrologist receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from the MS&CL Manager and/or Sr. Metrologist as needed. The Laboratory Metrologist solves practical problems encountered in fields of specialization. The Laboratory Metrologist develops and validates technical procedures and related activities including prioritizing and assigning work tasks to support established goals. Maintains contact with MS&CL Manager routinely and has routine interface with Sr. Metrologist and customers or their representatives.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)



  • Performs normal first line supervisor tasks including, but not limited to, assigning work priorities, approving PTO requests, approving time sheets, recommending awards and/or disciplinary action, and fostering technician growth by coaching/mentoring/training direct reports.
  • Ensures compliance to NASA-STD-8739.12 and plans, organizes, and coordinates the activities of personnel involved in the rework and calibration of Inspection, Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) traceable to the International System of Units (SI). Establishes and maintains schedules that are consistent with work requests, budget, and time constraints.
  • Maintains awareness of progress being made on assignments and keeps MS&CL Manager, customers, and Program Management (when required) informed on the status of all phases of laboratory operations.
  • Assists in evaluating capital equipment requirements, makes recommendations for procurement, compiles data and justifications as needed and routinely communicates needs to the MS&CL Manager.
  • Interfaces with customers as needed to enhance communication, planning, and coordination of task requested.
  • Provides independent judgment and evaluation of solutions to technical problems associated with metrology activities and conducts and/or directs more complex technical tasks associated with lab and field operations. Approves standard operating and calibration procedures and trains personnel as required.
  • Maintains and assures compliance with Quality Assurance, Safety, company policies and procedures.
  • Develops training plans for cross training and technician development.
  • Evaluates performance and provides feedback to technician. Tracks technician measurement area proficiencies.
  • Performs duties of Metrology Technician on an as needed basis to achieve established metrics.
  • Conducts technical procedure validation and review; approves technical procedures.
  • Conducts measurement uncertainty analysis and uncertainty budgets under the supervision of the Sr. Metrologist and/or MS&CL Manager.
  • Performs reverse trace analysis as directed and under the supervision of the Sr. Metrologist and/or MS&CL Manager.
  • Identifies and implements continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains current knowledge on metrology industry best practices and continuously expands metrology knowledge development in all measurement disciplines.
  • And all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated expertise / proficient knowledge in at least 2 of the following measurements areas.

    • Dimensional
    • Flow
    • Pressure
    • Electrical
    • Force/Torque
    • Mass




** Management will have selection discretion, professional experience in metrology and business along with specialized training commensurate with assignment should be considered.



  • Demonstrated leadership ability or potential and professional communication skills are required.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Five (5) years minimum experience in metrology or related field
  • Must be competent in developing, modifying, and writing calibration methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of measurement uncertainty principles and measurement traceability
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a NASA PIV badge
  • Must be a U.S. citizen


Preferred Qualifications or Skills



  • Associate degree in Metrology or Electronics
  • Familiarity with computer programming.
  • Proficiency in developing, modifying, and evaluating MetCal automated calibration routines.
