The Student Nurse Extern Program offers nursing students the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience by working one-on-one with a nurse preceptor. This program is designed to enhance clinical skills, provide exposure to various nursing specialties, and prepare students for a successful transition into professional nursing practice. Throughout the program there will be various activities offered to build relationships and foster community in a fun and engaging way. The student nurse extern will get the opportunity to provide their top three department choices for program placement.

Eligibility:

The Summer Student Nurse Associate program is open to any nursing student who meets one of the following criteria:

  • Successful completion of the junior year of a BSN nursing program and be on the State of Maine CNA Registry.
  • Successful completion of the first year of an ADN program and be on the State of Maine CNA Registry.

Nursing students who are interested in year-round/regular status employment at MMC-Biddeford/Sanford and are CNAs on the Maine State Registry are encouraged to apply for any of our other open positions as a CNA at the end of the summer program.

Summary:

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) is enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN nursing program. The SNE provides the appropriate level of patient care in various settings, under the on-site delegation and supervision of a registered professional nurse

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Education: Must be enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN nursing program. Reference is required from Nursing Chair/Dean or enrollment in an externship for senior practicum NUR course credit
  • License/Certifications: Must be certified as a Nursing Assistant and be on the State of Maine Registry or equivalent (registered out-of-state). Must have proof of Basic Life Support.
  • Experience:Experience: Must complete first year of ADN or junior level course requirements of BSN in an accredited nursing program in good academic standing to be eligible to apply.
