Job Summary

This is an inpatient position within Saint Francis/St Mary's hospitals Rehabilitation Services department.

Reporting to the Inpatient Rehab Manager (Rehab Svcs Mgr 1), the Clinical Supervisor (Rehab Svcs Supv 2) is a licensed Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, or Speech-Language Pathologist who provides supervision to the rehabilitation staff, including support staff. The incumbent oversees employees, creates and maintains staff schedules, ensures compliance within the practice setting, enforces policies, procedures, and guidelines related to the work setting and clinical practice. In addition, the Clinical Supervisor is responsible for evaluating and assuring the quality of work performed by the specific therapy discipline meets departmental, organizational, professional, and regulatory standards.

As such, the Clinical Supervisor is a recognized expert and source of knowledge in the specific therapy discipline and serves as the immediate supervisor of all discipline-specific staff, Resident(s), Fellow(s), and students. The Clinical Supervisor independently performs routine and complex patient evaluations and therapeutic interventions within the scope of clinical practice. In addition, the Clinical Supervisor serves as a consultant to staff, students, and other medical professionals in discipline-specific patient evaluations, therapeutic intervention planning, or intervention across the array of services provided by the specific discipline.

While performing job duties, the Clinical Supervisor may also supervise support personnel as allowed by discipline-specific California State Practice Acts, including Therapist Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides as well as students. At the UCSF Health Saint Francis and UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital Campuses, the Clinical Supervisor works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Based on the Clinical Supervisor's experience and competence, they may also work with patients across the age and acuity continuum at UCSF Health.

As a member of the Rehab Leadership Team, the Clinical Supervisor works with the other discipline-specific Clinical Supervisors, the Inpatient Rehab Manager, and other team members to make recommendations for and plan implementation of any changes in patient care procedures, protocols, or programs provided by the specific discipline. The Clinical Supervisor leads staff development and staff engagement activities, including annual performance evaluations, for all rehab staff within the specific therapy discipline. The Clinical Supervisor makes recommendations to the Manager for staffing guidelines, supplies, and equipment needs required to meet the needs of patients served.


Provides supervision to rehabilitation staff including therapists in any rehabilitation discipline (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, audiology). May also include supervision of rehabilitation support staff. Oversees employees, ensures compliance, enforces policies and procedures, and schedules staff. Supervises and unit / departments efficiency, productivity and performance; resolves or escalates daily clinical, program and operational issues.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $183,000 - $194,200 (Annual Rate).

St. Mary's Medical Center and Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, and their associated outpatient clinics, are now part of UCSF Health. This addition gives us the opportunity to offer primary and secondary care in more places and increases UCSF Health's ability to care for patients with complex medical needs. Combining community care with academic medicine makes convenient, comprehensive care easier to access for all our patients.

At UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital and UCSF St. Mary's Hospital, we provide Rehabilitation services primarily to adult and geriatric inpatients, working with a multidisciplinary care team to improve the function and cognition of patients in our primary and secondary acute care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and ambulatory clinics.

The Department of Rehabilitation Services at UCSF Health provides Occupational, Physical, and Speech-Language and Dysphagia Therapy for patients across the age continuum in UCSF Health acute care hospitals, inpatient rehab facilities, and outpatient locations throughout San Francisco.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of therapy discipline (OT, PT, SLP). Ability to apply principles to designated setting to ensure operations meet regulatory standards.

  • Minimum five (5) years of general acute care experience

  • Minimum one (1) year of prior experience as a Supervisor or Clinical Leader

  • Minimum 150 hours of related clinical and/or professional coursework including lecture/lab
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in training, mentoring and guiding employees in Physical Therapy techniques. Motivates and inspires staff to improve patient care services. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior clinical and/or leadership experience in an academic medical center
  • Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Knowledge of organization's patient care documentation technology to teach others, recommend and oversee improvements and troubleshoot issues.

  • Prior experience with Epic clinical documentation, billing, and scheduling tools.

License/Certification


  • Bachelor's degree in related area as a PT Clinical Supervisor / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Possession of, or proven eligibility for, licensure in the State of California in the related clinical discipline.
  • AHA BLS certification requirement
