Summary:
Performs routine testing in a high-complexity clinical diagnostic laboratory. Responsible for receipt of patient samples as well as the preparation of samples for microscopic examination and analysis by Pathology. This role troubleshoots on-hold cases and collaborates with the wider Laboratory Operations team to move samples effectively through the workflow. Also focuses on cutting, mounting, staining, and batching slides.

Essential Functions:
Ensures proper identification, sorts specimens in accordance with priority and difficulty of work, and assigns specimen numbers.
Describes the appearance of specimens; trims into blocks.
Embeds specimens ensuring proper orientation.
Prepares specimens for a rapid frozen section diagnosis using liquid nitrogen and a cryostat microtome.
Maintains quality control records.
Determines when prescribed techniques and apparatus should be modified in order to meet required quality standards.

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma Related Field of Study required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have thorough understanding of the theories, practice and techniques used in histology to include fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains and frozen sections.
- Must be fully competent on all laboratory instrumentation to include pH meter, balances, microtomes, tissue processors, cryostats, coverslippers, etc.
- Must be able to correctly and accurately embed all human tissue to include skin and or animal tissue then cut at least 70 blocks, with multiple levels and slides per block.
- Must be able cut artifact free 5micrometer sections.
- Must be able to perform a high quality H&E stain.
