Manager of Accounting Summary/Objective The Manager of Accounting provides oversight and management of the accounting team in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment. This individual utilizes a strong accounting background and education to ensure accurate and reliable financial information, adherence to SOX controls and compliance with GAAP. The Manager of Accounting is expected to complete and oversee complex accounting responsibilities while training and developing the accounting team. Essential Functions
- Responsible for driving the month-end, quarter-end and year-end close process, which includes balance sheet reconciliations, ad-hoc analysis, trial balance reviews and financial statement preparation, while adhering to tight deadlines.
- Oversee month-end close process to meet executive team deadlines.
- Lead and manage accounting team, including training and employee development.
- Supports the Accounting Director and Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) with hiring, which may include interviewing applicants and providing input regarding certain roles.
- Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring and day-to-day direction to the accounting team while promoting a collaborative environment.
- Demonstrate strong leadership by maximizing team performance, providing regular, clear feedback, recognizing employee growth an accomplishments, and creating an atmosphere of congeniality, accountability and respect.
- Review the work of the accounting team for accuracy.
- Responsible for complex account reconciliations, schedules, and entries.
- Review financials, analyze outliers and variances; reclassify as necessary and record accruals as necessary.
- Assist with audits and external reporting as needed.
- Follow accounting policies and procedures as well as identify and recommend new policies and areas of improvement.
- Research accounting issues for compliance with GAAP.
- Implement new initiatives, procedures, and training for the department. May support the Accounting Director in implementing accounting software as needed.
- Collaborate effectively with other departments and clinic staff.
- Manage and oversee ad hoc projects, delegate responsibilities as needed.
- May oversee sensitive functional areas.
- Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility This position has overall supervisory responsibility for employees on the accounting team. The Manager provides guidance, coaching, and mentoring to foster a high-performing and collaborative team. Responsibilities include monitoring and managing overall performance of employees, including corrective action, performance reviews, annual increases, and promotions. Conducts interviews and makes employment offers in collaboration with human resources. Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance or related field required. Advanced degree and CPA a plus.
- 5-7 years of experience in accounting/finance background required, with 0-2 years in a managerial role preferred.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel required. SQL Database experience desired.
- Experience with Workday accounting software preferred.
- Proficient skills with financial reporting, such as balance sheets and profit/loss statements.
- Demonstrated ability to work with various levels of management and to influence others without formal authority.
