Job Summary:

This position will work with a team of chemists in the laboratory of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP), as part of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), to provide robust precipitation data to a diverse group of scientists and entities across the nation.

The successful candidate will perform routine analysis on thousands of precipitation samples with minimal supervision. Work in the laboratory involves the operation of basic pH and conductivity meters, sample filtration, and occasional work on our ICP-OES and other analytical instrumentation. Personal initiative, independence, critical thinking skills, and collaboration are essential in this role.


Responsibilities:
Performs testing, manages testing services, and reports results for chemical constituents in specimens and samples collected from humans, plants, animals, or other environmental matrices.

  • 70% Prepares, develops, and conducts chemical research experiments analysis of specimens employing quality control and quality assurance practices
  • 5% Utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems to meet unit objects in alignment with strategic initiatives
  • 10% Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data
  • 5% Participates in educational and outreach activities for various individuals and groups
  • 5% Utilizes assigned analytical methods-based quality requirements to verify test result validity and/or meet regulatory compliance
  • 5% Verifies test result validity and/or completes regulatory compliance activities

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree with a major in Chemistry or related field (e.g. Environmental Sciences, Biochemistry, etc.)


Qualifications:

Chemistry college-level laboratory course work preferred and environmental laboratory experience a plus. Experience with sample preparation and basic meters preferred.


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 6 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding


Salary:

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications

The ideal candidate is expected to be a productive and self-motivated individual with the ability to think critically, learn quickly, and function both independently and within a team. This role involves extensive standing and walking along the lab bench throughout the workday, while performing repetitive upper body motions.
