Job Summary

The Department of Dermatology provides a variety of outpatient services: clinical dermatological surgical services, Dermatopathology services, pigment lesion services, cosmetic surgery, and Mohs surgery. This per diem position supports the UC Davis Dermatopathology Service/Mohs Laboratories by providing support for the technical areas within the Dermatopathology Service/Mohs Laboratories. A demonstrated experience performing high complexity testing in the following laboratory procedures: Applicant should have experience in paraffin sectioning, embedding. Mohs Micrographic Surgery frozen section preparation, frozen immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, performing routine and special stains, and grossing Dermatology specimens. Knowledge of guidelines established by TJC, CAP, and CLIA.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Must meet personnel educational high complexity test requirements under CLIA
  • 1 year experience in histology or pathology laboratory
  • Ability to perform complex laboratory procedures following established protocols.
  • Ability to maintain records legibly and accurately. Ability to work under time constraints. Ability to multi task various projects and complete each project within the giving timeline.
  • Must have technical and mechanical skills to operate and perform preventative maintenance on equipment in the area.
  • Must possess ability to follow instructions as defined.
  • Tact and diplomacy skills to meet departmental needs. Identifies self and section when answering/using the phone, deliver messages and/or refers phonecalls.to the. appropriate person. Forwards any calls, as required.
  • Handles telephone information/requests with courtesy, accuracy. and respect for patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills, documents and reports clearly, and concisely conveys instructions, directions, and information appropriately.
  • Ability to prioritize work based upon departmental turnaround requirements and priority requests. Continuously works at establishing a professional working relationship with all departmental personnel.
  • Readily assist coworkers. Maintain appropriate interdepartrnental communications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Histology certification (ASCP) or eligibility.
  • Knowledge of guidelines as established by JCAHO, College of American Pathology (CAP) and the National Society of Histotechnology.
  • Knowledge of the laboratory and Hospital Information System (LES) and other basic computer programs.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate complex Laboratory equipment according to established guidelines.
  • Knowledge and ability to state and follow Universal Precautions as required In a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality before, during and after specimen test preparation and performance.
  • Ability to follow established protocol and guide lines for specimen handling.
  • Knowledge of UCDHS and Department of Dermatology Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulatory requirements pertaining to the laboratory, Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), College of College of American Pathology (CAP), and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) clinical laboratory safety regulations.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Must be able to work per diem Monday-Friday with variable hours and overtime as needed. Able to travel to current and future off-site locations. Must attend annual mandated JCAHO training.
