Summary:
The Jain Lab (https://cbs.umn.edu/directory/kanishk-jain) is looking for a motivated, organized, and enthusiastic Research Professional 2 to support new and ongoing research projects in the lab aimed at investigating the roles of histone modifying enzymes in biology and disease. The primary purpose of the position will be to assist the PI and team members with basic molecular biology research, such as cloning and preparing DNA, protein purification and characterization, and maintenance of lab stocks. The individual in this position will also be expected to contribute to organizational tasks such as maintaining lab inventories and purchasing supplies.

Essential Functions:
75% Molecular Biology Research: With close supervision and using established protocols prepare plasmid DNA for protein expression, grow and harvest bacterial cultures, express and purify proteins, and prepare samples for biochemical analysis. Prepare general lab stocks and reagents. Maintain accurate records for the research group. Participate in lab group meetings and attend relevant on-campus seminars and discussion groups.

20% Lab Inventory Support: Maintain general organization and availability of laboratory materials, reagents, and supplies. Update and maintain spreadsheets/databases of reagents. Assist with placing orders and tracking and receiving deliveries.

5% Other: Other various duties as assigned by the supervisor to support lab operations.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor degree chemistry, biochemistry or a related field, plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and work experience to equal 6 years. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written formats. Familiarity with standard practices for laboratory safety. Previous experience in a research laboratory. Strong organizational skills and familiarity with basic computer programs such as word processing and spreadsheets. Ability to record results and track samples accurately using standard practices.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with one or more of the following techniques is beneficial but not required:
Plasmid DNA design and preparation
Sterile technique
Bacterial cell culture
Mammalian cell culture
Protein expression, purification, and characterization
DNA and protein sequence analysis
Statistical analysis, and/or proficiency in coding

The department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics is committed to understanding the molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases and cancer; developing novel strategies in biocatalysis and biotechnology; and advancing knowledge through structural biology and molecular biophysics. Pay Range: $44,000 - $ 48,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
