Job Summary

This assignment will be 3 months in duration.

Psychiatric Acute (Adult)

The Mental Health Partner / Hospital Assistant provides essential support to clinical staff and supervisors to ensure the highest level of patient care. This role involves assisting patients with daily activities, monitoring patient well-being, providing transportation, handling documentation, and performing various clinical and administrative tasks.

When assigned to the Behavioral Health Unit (BHU), the role includes performing unit-specific duties under the leadership of the nursing staff and charge nurse. Responsibilities may also include working as a safety sitter and leading therapeutic groups and community meetings.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct & Indirect Patient Care

  • Conduct regular patient rounds, assist with hygiene, and monitor patients in seclusion/restraint
  • Escort patients to appointments and assist with meals, personal belongings, and laundry.
  • Take and record vital signs, oxygen saturation, and nutritional intake.
  • Document rounds, patient observations, and any abnormal findings; report to the RN.
  • Provide support during assaultive situations and assist with therapeutic activities.
  • In outpatient settings, assist with patient intake, discharge services, and medical records management.

Administrative Support & Patient Registration

  • Answer phones and doors, stock supplies, schedule appointments, and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Register patient admissions, verify insurance eligibility, and obtain authorization codes.
  • Assist with patient valuables collection, page the Officer of the Day (OD) as needed, and run emergency errands to pharmacy/laboratory.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness of emergency equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Active American Heart Association CPR certification.
  • Minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong attendance record, reliability, and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical setting.
  • Physical and health screening, fingerprinting, and background check required.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience in an acute care and/or psychiatric hospital setting.
  • CNA certification or current nursing student with completed inpatient hospital rotation.
  • Flexibility in assignments, shifts, and work duties.

License/Certification


  • Active American Heart Association CPR certification.
