Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Our Office of Communications provides services in media relations, writing, social media, design, photography and video. We also provide consultation for marketing and branding internal and external communications. |
Position Summary |
Are you passionate about science? Do you ever wish you could help friends and family better understand a scientific topic you care about?
We invite you to join the communications team at the
UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health for a summer position that will bring you into the world of science communication for public health. As the number one public school of public health in the country, we aim to improve health for all and eliminate inequities so that communities across the world can thrive.
What is public health? Maybe the better question is, 'what isn't public health?' This position is an opportunity for those with an interest in any kind of science to learn how it impacts our health and how to share that with the Gillings School's broad audiences.
The Communications Specialist will have a role in:
Reading and translating research studies into news for general audiences
- Creating and editing web pages
- Designing and sending newsletters
- Social media strategy
- Digital flyer and graphic design with Canva
- Corresponding with scientific experts and students |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
- Experience in science, technology, engineering, math or other health-related fields
- Have an interest in learning to communicate technical topics to general audiences
- Be open to learning about unfamiliar topics in order to communicate them
- Have familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft 365 and Canva
- Be comfortable working independently and interacting with a wide variety of audiences, including technical experts, media, clinicians and students
- Be open to receiving feedback on creative work to grow their communications skills |
