Position Summary |
This is a professional and research position involving both lab management and independent research focusing on the functional genetic and evolutionary genomic basis of adaptation in herbivorous insects. Independent research activities include the generation, documentation, analysis, and presentation of experiments and results, including involvement in the preparation of scientific publications. Lab management activities include independent planning, organizing, and directing day-today management of an academic research laboratory. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- 3+ years of post-undergraduate experience in the generation and bioinformatic analysis of DNA/RNA sequencing data (e.g., Illumina, PacBio, Nanopore) including: high molecular weight DNA extraction from low-input samples; preparation, quantification, quality control, and troubleshooting of DNA/RNA sequencing libraries; communicating technical aspects of DNA/RNA sequencing with core facilities or conducting sequencing firsthand.
- Proficiency in execution of programs on a high-performance computing cluster and processing raw DNA/RNA sequencing data.
- Proficiency with standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR and gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning), and willingness to apply these proficiencies to learn new research techniques when necessary.
- Graduate coursework in entomology, evolution, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry or physiology.
- Experience working with insect specimens, including dissection using light microscopy.

Independent Research:
- Independently conduct research, focused on the functional genetic and evolutionary genomic basis of adaptation in herbivorous insects. Research activities will primarily utilize the molecular genetic, bioinformatic, and entomological skills listed under "Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies".
- Complete documentation and presentation of research activities is necessary.
- Specific research goals will be communicated by the PI, and specific tasks to accomplish these goals will be collaboratively developed with the PI through consistent communication and updates.

Maintain Colonies of Study Organisms:
- Responsible for overseeing insect colonies and growth of plants they feed upon. This may involve coordinating efforts by student researchers contributing to this task.
- Ensure that proper environmental conditions are continuously maintained and care is provided on schedule, and that there are no gaps in these efforts (because temporary neglect can lead to highly disruptive drop-offs in colony size or complete loss of colonies).

Train Students in Laboratory Methods and Data Analysis:
- Responsible for being the lab point person for laboratory techniques and associated data analysis, especially with regard to the generation and interpretation of DNA/RNA sequencing data (e.g., Illumina, PacBio, Nanopore) and other molecular genetic techniques.
- Train students and assist in troubleshooting in these areas.

Contribute to writing publications, grant applications, and laboratory protocols:
- Contribute to scientific and technical writings for use in scientific publications with which they are involved and laboratory protocols. This will include any necessary literature review. They will be included in authorship of resulting publications in accordance with their contributions (first authorship is encouraged).
- May contribute to grant applications that include projects that they may work on and are encouraged to generate novel ideas of interest to themselves and the lab.
