SUMMARY/OBJECTIVES

The FIU Senior Manager leads the Fraud Detection, Fraud Support, and New Account Review teams of SouthState Bank's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). The responsibilities of this team include the identification of fraudulent activity, the management of associated alerts, and the management of communication with branches and customers.

The FIU Senior Manager will be a banking fraud subject matter expert who will lead the team, manage its day-to-day operations, develop new and existing Analysts, and work with the Director of Fraud Management to identify opportunities to enhance fraud prevention controls.

It is the policy of SouthState Bank to comply with the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act, and the requirements of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and other related anti-money laundering/ anti-terrorist financing initiatives. The Bank has established a Bank Secrecy Act/ Anti-Money Laundering/Office of Foreign Assets Control (BSA/AML/OFAC) Compliance Program, covering all requirements of the BSA, USA PATRIOT Act and OFAC rules and regulations.Upon completion of required training, the Board of Directors of SouthState Bank shall hold each employee accountable for adhering to the established operating procedures and internal controls as set forth in the Bank's BSA/AML/OFAC Program. Continued instances of non-compliance or willful violation of law may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide oversight of all FIU fraud personnel and collaborate with other departments when conducting investigations, as appropriate;

  • Supervise and mentor direct reports performing fraud related investigations and tasks; provide oversight to ensure appropriate action is taken in all circumstances;

  • Responsible for ensuring effective case management including Analyst dashboard tracking and internal controls to ensure alerts, cases, and referral responses are completed in an accurate and timely manner;

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, and implementation of fraud related procedures;

  • Oversight of quality reviews focusing on fraud alert decisions;

  • Communicate with FIU senior management on internal control deficiencies detected during the account monitoring/investigative processes;

  • Assist with preparation of various reports and presentations;

  • Maintain enhancement and implement fraud risk management related policies, procedures, methodologies and standards;

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the bank's products, services, customers and geographic locations, and the potential fraud risks associated with those activities;

  • Escalate activity that meets the established criteria for investigating suspected fraudulent or problem accounts through the submission of an Unusual Activity Referral Form;

  • Maintain proficiency in all aspects of fraud and BSA/AML compliance; attend FIU and fraud prevention training as assigned by the Chief BSA Officer;

  • Adhere to all provisions of SouthState Bank policies and procedures, including the confidentiality policy, code of ethics, and BSA/AML/OFAC policies and procedures;

  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned, according to the needs of the Bank

COMPETENCIES

  • Subject matter expertise in a wide range of fraud typologies including online banking fraud, account takeovers, check fraud, debit card fraud, ATM investigations, ACH/Zelle fraud, and business email compromise;

  • Working knowledge of payment rails such as wire, ACH, debit cards, and checks. Knowledge relating to Instant Payments, new account fraud and synthetic identities, and cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin is a plus;

  • Extensive and proven experience managing fraud operations within a financial institution;

  • Self-motivated, dependable, adaptable, and detail-oriented individual with strong analytical and organizational skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills;

  • Ability to lead, motivate, and elevate a team of analysts while working under the pressure of tight deadlines and sometimes ambiguous situations;

  • Previous experience monitoring, reviewing and analyzing account activity in order to identify unusual or suspicious activity;

  • Strong understanding of bank operations including but not limited to navigating banking systems, understanding teller transactions, and interpreting customer transactions;

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills;

  • Ability to effectively manage and oversee FIU employees;

  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast paced, high demand and deadline driven environment;

  • Demonstrate a strong sense of urgency by responding immediately to escalated issues and rapidly changing priorities;

  • Provide exemplary customer service towards both internal and external parties;

  • Strong computer skills (spreadsheet and word processing); knowledge of and ability to use internal bank systems a plus;

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret Federal and State banking regulations related to the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering

Qualifications, Education, and Certification Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Experience:

    • 5 years minimum of related fraud and/or BSA/AML experience; preference given for prior experience in payments fraud;

    • Minimum 3 years supervisory or management experience;

    • Experience with automated fraud detection systems and alert agent tuning preferred

  • Certifications/Specific Knowledge:

    • In-depth knowledge of fraud risks and typologies in a financial institution; as well as BSA/AML regulations related to suspicious activity monitoring and reporting;

    • Strong understanding of bank operations including but not limited to navigating banking systems, understanding teller transactions and interpreting customer transactions;

    • Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation, or willingness to obtain within the first two years of employment;

    • Prior law enforcement given consideration, but cannot substitute for required experience

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS/CLASSES

  • New Employee Orientation

  • Required annual compliance training

  • System-specific training as necessary to perform duties

  • FIU/Financial crimes training as assigned by the Chief BSA Officer

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to remain seated or work standing in a confined area on a computer for a minimum of four (4) hours each workday.

  • Must be able to constantly use hands and fingers to enter data through or on a computer or answer a phone throughout most of an eight (8) hour shift.

  • Must be able to hear and communicate with coworkers and customers throughout the day.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Telecommuting roles no matter if hybrid or 100% full time telecommuting must have a secure home office environment that is free from background noise and distractions. Remote work is not a substitute for child/dependent care. Requirements are subject to change, as new systems and technology is delivered.

Travel may be required for attendance at meetings as needed.

In accordance with Colorado law: Colorado pay for this position is anticipated to be between $94,510.99 - $150,972.31 , actual offers to be determined based on applicant's skills, experience and education.
