Main Duties & Responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY:
Under direction of the Heat Treating Specialist, operates 
various types of heat treating equipment, used by the Company, making settings 
and adjustments as required to obtain correct mechanical properties as specified 
on material documentation.
DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Checks incoming materials, identifies and determines proper furnace 
settings and adjustments according to heat treat specifications.
2. Monitors heat treating equipment to assure proper settings and 
adjustments are maintained.
3. Works with appropriate personnel to determine proper heat treat 
procedure for all materials.
4. Records temperature and time cycle data and posts data as per 
established procedures.
5. Moves product or heat treating supplies within the department or to 
designated areas of the plant.
6. Performs daily maintenance and preventative maintenance on heat 
treating equipment and other tools and equipment used. Effect minor repairs as 
necessary. Assists with major repairs.
7. Visually or with precision measuring instruments, checks product 
specifications as to tensile strength, shear tolerance, micro hardness etc.
8. Performs or directs cleaning operations before, during and after heat 
treating.
9. Responsible for production quality and quantity of workpieces processed.
10. Works as an active team member by participating in problem solving, 
team building, and all other team activities to improve the processes, 
productivity, quality, etc. of the heat treating operations. Uses interpersonal skills 
as well as good written and verbal communications. Assists other department 
members as required
Equipment/Process Responsibilities - Performs duties where property, tools, 
equipment, or machines may be damaged or man hours lost through improper
daily maintenance and attention to processing. Sets-up and adjusts multiple and 
various heat treating equipment. Effects minor repairs to equipment.
Material or Product Responsibilities - Performs duties that require close 
attention to work and supporting documentation specifications and other 
requirements. Responsible for accuracy of products treated. Visually and/or with 
precision measuring instruments checks work for proper results..
Responsibility for Work of Others - Accuracy of communication is mandatory 
to the successful production and qualification of workpieces. Must 
communicate to appropriate personnel any problems or concerns regarding 
quality of work received or time flow of work in progress as it affects production 
schedules. Must be able to train employees of equal or lower classification in 
heat treating operations as well as on methods and procedures used by the 
Company in the production workflow and tracking.
Safety Responsibilities - Good housekeeping, knowledge of heat treating 
equipment safety and adherence to Company safety rules is required.
Initiative and Ingenuity - Requires initiative in solving problems associated with 
the set-up and operation of at least 2 pieces of heat treating equipment 
concurrently and ingenuity in adapting tooling and shop aids to complete 
operations. Makes suggestions for improving the efficiency of work flow or 
equipment operation. Takes on or reports for additional work as current tasks 
are completed. Performs other work related tasks as deemed necessary by 
Company needs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Environmental Surroundings - Work is in a machine shop environment where 
noise, temperature fluctuations, the repetitive nature of the job, etc. are less 
desirable than in a typical office environment.
Unavoidable Hazards -Possible hazards related to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and bums. Exposure to metalworking fluids, airborne particles and extreme high temperatures. Appropriate protective wear for eyes, ears and clothing are required.
EFFORT
Physical - Able to lift up to 100 pounds. Hand and finger manipulation to adjust 
equipment and settings. Able to reach, bend and stretch. Able to use tools 
required for heat treat set-up. Capable of maneuvering between and operate at 
least 2 pieces of heat treating equipment concurrently. Most job assignments 
require standing and/or sitting for periods exceeding 15 minutes at a time.
Mental - Work at times is highly repetitive and monotonous. However, set-up 
and adjustments to heat treating equipment may require improvisation or
ingenuity to achieve desired results. Reasoning ability required to interpret 
documentation of a highly technical nature. Must be able to draw valid 
conclusions from a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Required to run at 
least 2 pieces of heat treating equipment concurrently and able to organize work 
flow for best efficiency.
Visual - Close attention to detail with moderate eye concentration over long 
periods of time. Able to read various precision instruments and gauges etc. 
Must be able to visually check workpieces for quality.
Pay Range: $20.22to $25.45 Depending on experience. LG 10 2nd shift Monday through Friday 1:00pm to 9:30pm
Qualifications
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Demonstrated ability to read and write English of a level required in Company 
shop documents and computer software entry and processing requirements. 
Must be capable of applying mathematical operations using fractions, decimals, 
and temperature degrees as required by heat treating operations. Generally 
equivalent to journeyman level trade school with courses in heat treatment.
EXPERIENCE
Requires 3-5 years training or equivalent skills and knowledge expertise in the 
set-up and operation of heat treating equipment which are similar or comparable 
to those used by the Company and which are necessary to fulfill job 
requirements. Must have demonstrated the capability to set-up and operate the 
heat treating equipment required to the level of journeyman. Must read precision 
measuring instruments and gauges and engineering diagrams similar or 
comparable to those used in heat treating operations by the Company.
