Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The mission of the
UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. Our faculty, staff, students and administrators work collaboratively to build and foster an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and accessible to people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and beliefs.
The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 130 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm. |
Position Summary |
The Visiting Professor of the Practice in Sports Communication will provide students and faculty at
UNC Hussman with the opportunity to work with and learn from a renowned retired professional athlete with extensive professional or collegiate sports experience and industry expertise in sports communication. This is a temporary part-time faculty position.
The faculty member will co-teach a semester-long sports communication-related course alongside Livis Freeman, Distinguished Associate Professor in Sports Communication, creating a powerful educational partnership that combines academic expertise with real-world experience. Drawing upon their established professional networks, the Professor of the Practice will involve other leading industry professionals to work with Hussman students, providing unique mentorship opportunities and insider perspectives on the sports communication landscape. This collaborative approach will not only enrich the educational experience of students pursuing careers in sports media and communication but will also create meaningful connections that extend beyond the classroom to impact the larger campus community. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Earned master's or terminal degree in the same or closely related discipline as the course taught. In lieu of an earned terminal degree, instructors may be qualified by professional experience or by a combination of education and experience.
Professional experience related to the course taught is required, particularly as it relates to working in collegiate or professional sports. |

Ability to adapt to changing situations and convey the importance of diversity of thought and background of the people and topics covered. |
