Job Summary

The City of Kirkland's Information Technology Department is seeking an Undergraduate Intern!

Assists Information Technology Network and Operations staff members in their duties, thereby providing the Information Technology Intern the opportunity to learn about the functions and activities of an Information Technology Department while contributing valuable work to the City.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Assists the Network and Operations Division by performing a variety of tasks and participating in short-term and long-term projects, such as PC deployments, Help Desk, and documentation.
  • Assists users with computer and telephony hardware and software problems, and questions and arranges timely service from outside vendor support organizations when needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience with report writing, research methods, and data compilation and analysis.
  • Ability to independently organize and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work effectively and productively in a group setting.
  • Familiarity with standard computer software for word processing and spreadsheet applications (e.g., Microsoft suite: Word, Excel, and Outlook).

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and vendors.
  • Knowledge of application packages supported by the Division, such as the Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Knowledge of PC hardware platforms, components, peripherals, repair techniques and the use of diagnostic tools for troubleshooting problems.
  • Ability to comprehend and resolve the problems experienced by staff using software application programs.
  • Knowledge of current Windows PC operating systems.
  • Knowledge of PC networks and data communication concepts, preferably in a windows environment with Active Directory.
  • Basic knowledge of telephony concepts, preferably in VoIP PBX environments.
  • Basic knowledge of additional peripheral technologies including, but not limited to, audio, multi-function (printer, scanner, copier, fax) devices and personal digital assistants (such as Blackberry and Axim).
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and apply their contents to solving hardware and software problems.
  • Ability to accurately convey technical information to non-technical audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Good planning, organizing, problem solving and time-management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to maintain the absolute confidentiality of all sensitive files and materials accessed, discussed or observed while in the performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications:
Current enrollment in a community college or undergraduate program focused on computer science or a related field of study is required. Requires a well-developed understanding of and experience in the use of PC hardware and software running in a Windows XP environment. Experience with local area networks running in a Windows environment preferred. Skill with the Microsoft Office suite and Microsoft Outlook highly desirable. Excellent written, analytic, and verbal communication skills required. Due to the level of security access required for this position, will be required to pass a Washington State Patrol Background Check.

Salary note - The salary step amount offered will be dependent upon university enrollment level.

Working Conditions:
Incumbent is typically required to reach, stand, walk, finger, talk, hear, and perform activities requiring repetitive motions. Work is typically light work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of force greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated as light work.
