Key Responsibilities:

  • Training & Education: Provide environmental training and guidance to the construction project teams and subcontractors to ensure awareness and adherence to environmental standards.
  • Position will occasionally lead an Ames Academy training module either in person or virtually. Position works close with the project's designated Environmental representative to ensure compliance with environmental laws, contract specifications, and the Ames Environmental Management System (EMS) policies.
  • Provide training and guidance for performing permit compliance inspections and reporting associated with local, State and Federal iterations of the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Oil Pollution Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and actions pertaining to the Noxious Weed laws.
  • This position will assist the project team to develop and implement a project-specific Environmental Management Plan-or EMP-. The EMP is derived from Ames' EMS.
  • Risk Assessment: Understand environmental risk on construction sites to identify potential environmental hazards and develop mitigation strategies. Oversee the environmental impact of projects from pre-construction through to post-construction phases.
  • Environmental Audits and Reporting: Perform audits on existing projects and area operations including the subsequent reporting and mitigation potential issues. Work with the Ames Quality function as necessary to accomplish.
  • Relationship Building with both Internal and External Stakeholders: Manage relationships with third-party environmental consultants, regulators, trade associations material suppliers, and other partners to ensure environmental best practices are being followed.
  • Innovative Solutions: Stay informed on emerging trends in environmental sustainability and incorporate cutting-edge technologies and methods into company practices.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response: Assist project team with environmental incidents. This position coordinates the final reporting. Utilize HCSS software housing the Environmental Incident Report form.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Sustainability, or related field and/or a minimum of 5 years equivalent experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Experience working independently, following verbal or written instructions.
  • Experience operating 4-Wheel Drive vehicles.
  • Computer experience with Windows OS and standard applications.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledgeable with the principles of erosion and sediment controls. Must be able to obtain related certifications such as but not limited to CPESC, CESSWI, CISEC, QSD/QSP (CA) and State Departments of Transportation's Environmental mgt. certifications.
  • A detail-oriented approach with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with environmental management software and tools. Ames utilizes SW-2 for stormwater management and HCSS for reporting things like environmental incidents and for project teams to make both positive and negative Environmental Observations. HCSS also houses the Environmental audit checklist inspection form.
  • Applicant must be organized, self-motivated and able to work in a team environment with strong interpersonal skills to interface with project construction management, owner representatives, regulatory agencies, engineering and environmental consulting firms, subcontractors, attorneys, and other team members.
  • Previous experience in and/or a good understanding and technical background related to heavy and highway construction, mass earthworks, and underground piping and mining associated with civil projects is a plus.
