Position description

Emergency Medicine Section Chief, San Francisco VA Health Care System

The San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) is seeking applications for the position of Chief, Emergency Medicine (EM) Section at the SFVA Medical Center (SFVAMC). The SFVAHCS serves approximately 90,000 Veterans through the SFVAMC and nine community-based outpatient clinics. The SFVAMC is a tertiary academic medical center with around 5,000 admissions per year, offering a full complement of specialty care services, including interventional cardiology and gastroenterology, advanced oncology care, and advanced surgical care including orthopedics and neurosurgery. The EM section exists within the SFVAHCS Medical Service (Department of Medicine) and maintains an academic affiliation with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

The SFVAHCS Emergency Medicine section comprises approximately 12 staff physicians and 2 advanced practice providers who deliver urgent and emergency clinical care for the SFVAHCS. EM faculty also are engaged in research and education for UCSF students, internal medicine residents, and toxicology fellows. In addition to serving a major leadership role within the SFVAHCS, the EM Division Chief interfaces with other emergency medicine leaders within the San Francisco community and collaborates with the VHA national EM chiefs. The ideal candidate will be supported by a strong record of clinical excellence, leadership, teaching, and/or published scholarship.

Qualified applicants will have an MD (or equivalent), current medical license, and board-certification in Emergency Medicine and/or Internal Medicine. The ideal candidate will be suitable for UCSF academic appointment at UCSF at the level of associate or full professor, as supported by a strong record of clinical excellence, published scholarship, leadership, teaching, and/or research with extramural funding.

Duties for this position include:

* Oversee day-to-day clinical operations of the SFVAHCS Emergency Department and Urgent Care.

* Manage scheduling and hiring for the EM section to ensure appropriate clinical staffing.

* Engage with other clinical section, service, and nursing leaders to ensure provision of appropriate and high-quality emergency care.

* Partner with other SFVAHCS departments to ensure the availability, quality, and effective use of diagnostic, therapeutic, and mental health services.

* Collaborate with local partners within the San Francisco Department of Public Health EMS system as the representative of the SFVAHCS Emergency Medicine section.

* Maintain faculty appointment with the UCSF Department of Medicine.

* Promote the EM section and SFVAHCS Medical Service mission to serve as a leader in medical education.

* Provide mentorship and professional support to members of the EM section.
