Position Summary

The Scholarly Communications Librarian will enhance the visibility and impact of scholarly research. This role primarily involves leading initiatives on scholarly communication, advocating for ethical publishing practices, recommending technological solutions, and working closely with HSLIC team members to integrate and elevate research services. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in scholarly communication tools, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and possess a strong analytical ability to navigate and influence the scholarly publishing landscape. This position offers the opportunity to work in a team-oriented environment that values innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible faculty position with a primary appointment in HSLIC. The UNM provides a diversified package of benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Appointment is posted as open rank, to be determined based on qualifications. Salary range: $76,267.00 - $80,281.05.

Responsibilities:


  • Leads, develops, and implements comprehensive scholarly communication strategies that enhance the visibility and accessibility of research outputs.
  • Develops and leads educational opportunities for the UNM Health Sciences Center on scholarly communication topics such as publishing strategies, copyright and the use of digital tools in scholarly workflows.
  • Manages the institutional repository (IR) for the UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC), ensuring the preservation, discoverability, and accessibility of scholarly, educational, and research outputs from across the HSC.
  • Collaborates with HSLIC and UNM Libraries colleagues to support the overall development, coordination, and governance of the institutional repository for the University of New Mexico.
  • Evaluates and recommends technological solutions and infrastructure improvements that support the management and sharing of research outputs openly and effectively.
  • Participates in and supports research impact initiatives to help UNM Health Sciences Center faculty discover, track and communicate the impact of various research outputs, including scholarly articles and shared data.
  • Provides consultations and training for best practices in tracking and communicating the impact of research, such as use of ORCID and other impact metrics tools.
  • Actively participates in relevant committees and working groups within and beyond the institution to advocate for open science, open access, open data, and open educational resources.
  • Collaborates with the Resource Management Librarian to explore and evaluate open access publishing models such as transformative/read and publish agreements in alignment with institutional goals and researcher needs.
  • Initiates and maintains strong partnerships with academic departments, research centers, and other campus units.
  • Stays informed of national and international scholarly communications trends, policy changes, and academic research in scholarly publishing, ensuring that HSLIC colleagues and users are updated on the latest developments.
  • Participates in faculty activities including librarianship, education, research, publishing, presenting at professional conferences, and providing service.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

Qualifications


Required/Minimum:

  • Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited (or foreign equivalent) program.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly communication practices and supporting technologies.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of scholarly communication initiatives, including areas such as open access publishing, institutional repositories, or research impact.
  • Knowledge of digital tools and platforms that support scholarly communication (e.g., ORCID, repository software, impact metrics tools).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines and departments, building relationships with faculty, researchers, and librarians to support shared goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex topics into engaging, user-friendly content through workshops, consultations, presentations, or written guides/instructions.
  • Evidence of interest and readiness to engage in librarianship, education, research, and service in alignment with faculty expectations at the University of New Mexico. Examples may include prior teaching, presentations, publications, participation in research projects, or other scholarly and professional activities.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
