Job Overview

The Department of History currently has 21 faculty members and an enrollment of about 175 undergraduate and 35 graduate majors. The Department offers Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees, and Ph.D. degrees.

The Department of History in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for an Assistant Professor-Educator with an initial three-year appointment. This is a non-tenure track, AAUP-represented position with the expectation of long-term renewal contingent upon strong performance in the role.

Essential Functions

  • Teach the U.S. Survey and a new undergraduate course on Democracy and American Tradition with a focus on formative documents, including the Federalist Papers, the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence.
  • Teach a 3-3 load.
  • Participate in professional development activities such as presentations at regional or national conferences, for which departmental support is available.
  • Modest service responsibilities related to undergraduate teaching.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to effective date of appointment all of the following are required:



  • Ph.D. in United States history.
  • Research experience in Revolutionary America, the Early National or Antebellum period, the evolution of democracy in the United States, or the relationship between capitalism and democracy in the American context.
  • Teaching experience as collegiate-level instructor of record in at least one undergraduate course.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. residency. This position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
