About the Department
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences ( CALS) is one of the largest colleges at North Carolina State University, a land-grant institution located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Agriculture and life sciences have been integral parts of North Carolina State University since the doors first opened in 1889. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences continues that heritage today.

CALS teaches students in disciplines related to agriculture and life sciences, creates new knowledge through innovative research, provides solutions for the public with community-based extension programs, and develops leaders to guide society - all to improve the economic, environmental, and social well-being of our state, and the world. CALS Academic Programs carries out the College's teaching mission, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as two-year associate degrees through the Agricultural Institute.
Essential Job Duties
There is an overwhelming need for more people to work in the agriculture industry. To maintain an academically strong and diverse population within the Agricultural Institute to meet industry needs, we must have someone that will be able to focus on recruiting students on a consistent basis. This position will work with students from middle school, high school, and other colleges through the admissions process and into their first semester at NC State to prepare them for college and the agriculture workforce.

Leadership for all Agricultural Institute ( AGI) recruiting efforts will help identify and recruit academically strong and diverse students. Responsibilities will includes budget management, recruitment plan development and implementation, enhancing industry partnerships, and explaining student opportunities in higher education. The individual selected will travel across North Carolina and serve as a presenter for high school and college programs, recruitment events, and regional teacher meetings. This will include, but is not limited to maintaining/ordering all recruiting materials, brochures, flyers, serving as the primary contact for recruiting, managing calendars, drafting correspondence, and assisting students and parents with their inquiries about admission into the Agricultural Institute and other areas of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences ( CALS).

A vital component of a degree from the Agricultural Institute is the internship program. In addition to recruiting, this position will manage the internship program including student placement, site visitations, communications with employers, and conducting an internship poster presentation and industry luncheon.

They will serve as the Internship Coordinator with recruiting businesses to host interns and registering students in the AGI Internship database. The person in this position will serve as advisor to our Agricultural Institute Club (student organization) and may also actively teach the Introduction to the Agricultural Institute course and other courses as needed.

Primary duties of the Recruiter/Internship Coordinator include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate with the Agricultural Institute Director to continue a recruiting plan to attract students from underrepresented and diverse populations in North Carolina. Maintaining existing and establishing new partnerships with key stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Coordinate efforts in maintaining an effective social media presence. This could include but is not limited to weekly postings that highlight activities within the Agricultural Institute.
  • Develop and work within a budget for the Agricultural Institute recruitment efforts.
  • Advise the Agricultural Institute Club to encourage student-led activities, leadership development opportunities and campus community participation events for club members.
  • Assist with the teaching of the Agricultural Institute Introduction Course for first year students or other courses as needed.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with prospective students, applicants, parents, and counselors, to identify, recruit, and enroll a new student class each year. Initiating creative programming to engage student participation.
  • Assist with the planning of recruitment events to ensure that the Agricultural Institute reaches the targeted group of prospective students. Networking and collaborating with colleagues in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences .
  • Correspond via SLATE, NC State University's CRM, with applicants regarding admission decisions and next steps. Proactive outreach and recruitment to students interested in the Agricultural Institute.
  • Use excellent communication skills to recruit and advise students, families, and school counselors regarding NC State, the Agricultural Institute, the admissions process, application materials, and next steps.
  • Represent NC State University, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Agricultural Institute to prospective students, parents, and school counselors by participating in high school visits, college fairs, receptions, open house events, etc. There is extensive contact with the public by phone, email, and in person through travel.
  • Report recruiting activities and enrollment metrics to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with AGI educators to place match students with internships, manage the internship database, visit students at internship locations, host an internship luncheon and poster presentation.This is part of the instructor or record duties for AGI 192 - External Learning Experience. All facilitation of this class will be performed as part of this position.
  • Recruitment efforts involve extensive travel, primarily in North Carolina, and considerable public speaking. Weekend work will be required occasionally.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's degree or Bachelors Degree in relevant discipline, with a minimum of 2 years of student recruitment or undergraduate admissions experience.
  • The successful candidate must meet the qualifications to hold rank of Lecturer.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of college level curriculum and post graduation career opportunities.
  • Able to communicate, collaborate, initiate, and implement recruiting plans.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member.
  • Strong organization and time management skills to ensure scheduled deadlines.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of computerized management information systems (databases).
  • Demonstrated ability to make accurate and consistent interpretations of a broad variety of academic and/or administrative policies and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential student records, personnel, or organizational matters.
  • Flexibility to travel for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds or more, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Disciplines related to agriculture.
  • Experience in a University work setting.
  • Experience in higher education, recruiting, student services, or similar fields.
  • Experience in event planning.
  • Industry connections within North Carolina agriculture.
  • Experience with a variety of technologies.
  • Experience in recruiting, career counseling, academic advising, or related student affairs experience, with specific familiarity with curriculum within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and related career fields and opportunities.
