Assists in achieving departmental goals by safely and effectively monitoring, operating and maintaining facility systems and equipment, including but not limited to Fire Tube Steam Boilers, Steam Distribution and Condensate Return Systems, Packaged Water Chillers, Cooling Towers, Chilled Water and Condenser Water Systems, Clean Steam Generators, Clean Steam Distribution Systems, Heating Hot Water Systems, Domestic Water Systems, Pure Water Systems, Animal Watering and RODI Water Systems, Air Handlers and Air Distribution Systems, Exhaust Fans and Exhaust Systems, Gas Systems, Electrical Power Distribution and Emergency Power Systems, Control Air Systems, Life Safety Systems, Campus Fire Detection Systems, Building Automation Systems, Sterilizers and Freezers. Completes formal Central Energy Plant stationary engineer and steam boiler monitoring variance qualification as directed. Performs other related duties as directed to meet the goals and objectives of the Department.

The Utilities Team is seeking a stationary steam engineer with a strong background in BAS system monitoring and alarm response, as well as experience as a chilled water systems operator for the second shift Control Room.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Shift engineers will perform duties as described herein in specific facilities, in the Central Energy Plant, or across St Jude campus as campus rovers. Assignments between campus rover duties and Central Energy Plant duties are at the discretion of the Utilities Manager and the Director of FOM, and shift engineers can be moved between the two as needed for the safety and proper operation of the campus.
  • Central Energy Plant Engineer - Qualifies as Central Energy Plant Engineer within the time frame established by the Director, Facilities Operations and Maintenance.
  • Donald Pinkel Research Tower Engineer - Qualifies as Donald Pinkel Research Tower Engineer within the time frame established by the Director, Facilities Operations and Maintenance
  • Good Manufacturing Practices Facility Engineer - Qualifies as Good Manufacturing Practices Facility Engineer within the time frame established by the Director, Facilities Operations and Maintenance.
  • Inspiration4 Advanced Research Center Engineer - Qualifies as a Inspiration4 Advanced Research Center (I4ARC) Engineer within the time frame established by the Director, Facilities Operations and Maintenance.
  • Campus Shift Engineer - Qualifies as Campus Shift engineer within the time frame established by the Director, Facilities Operations and Maintenance. Maintains basic knowledge of Campus equipment and systems, and thorough knowledge of all major Campus breakers and critical isolation valves through participation in continuing training programs and self-study. Performs the duties of Campus Shift engineer as needed. Performs other related duties as directed to meet the goals and objectives of the Department.
  • Qualifies a Shift Engineer in new buildings as they are built, expanded, or acquired.
  • Maintains basic knowledge of Campus equipment and systems, through participation in continuing training programs and self-study.
  • Monitors, operates and maintains systems and equipment in all buildings, including but not limited to Fire Tube Boilers, Steam Distribution and Condensate Return Systems, Packaged Water Chillers, Cooling Towers, Chilled Water and Condenser Water Systems, Electrical Power Distribution and Emergency Power Systems, Control Air System, Life Safety Systems, Campus Fire Detection Systems and the Campus Building Automation System.
  • Maintains water treatment equipment and proper chemical concentrations in the Steam and Condensate System, and Chilled Water and Condenser Water Systems, Heating Hot Water Systems, Domestic Water Systems, Animal Watering and RODI Water Systems, Air Handlers and Air Distribution System, Exhaust Fans and Exhaust System, and Gas Systems.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and systems as directed by the Utilities or Shift Supervisors. Effectively identifies and troubleshoots systems and equipment problems.
  • Takes immediate and appropriate action to safeguard property and personnel during emergency conditions. Participates in drills and periodic operational evaluations. Takes proper action to mitigate the severity of simulated emergencies.
  • Trains other Shift Engineer Candidates as required. Effectively coaches, instructs and evaluates trainees during their qualification.
  • Complies verbatim with all written operating, maintenance and emergency response policies and procedures. Keeps appropriate personnel informed as required by circumstances. Properly records information in equipment logs and the daily log.
  • Communicates in a clear and professional manner.
  • Continually maintains a courteous, positive and responsive attitude during interactions with patients, visitors, and SJCRH and contractor personnel. Actively demonstrates a positive customer service philosophy at all times. Performs other related duties as directed to meet the goals and objectives of the Department.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • High School diploma or GED required

Minimum Experience:

  • Three (3) years experience as a Shift Engineer or Boiler Operator, Maintenance Mechanic, A/C Refrigeration Mechanic or Maintenance Engineer in a Hospital or related environment or an Operator in a facility with rigorous conduct of operations requirements
  • Must have knowledge of design, construction, operation and maintenance of Boilers, Chillers and Cooling Towers

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by Law:

  • (LC:STEAM-1ST) Steam Engineer First Class License from Memphis and Shelby County Office of Construction Code Enforcement.
  • (LC:REFRIG-1ST) Refrigeration Engineer First Class License from Memphis and Shelby County Office of Construction Code Enforcement

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification preferred

Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of design, construction, operation and maintenance of common mechanical and electrical components
  • Thorough knowledge of design, construction, operation and maintenance of Boilers, Chillers and Cooling Towers
  • Knowledge of basic building automation system design and operation
  • Knowledge of basic safety requirements for working on mechanical and electrical components
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic quickly and correctly
  • Ability to perform basic computer activities (e-mail, windows, etc.)
  • Ability to work quickly and effectively during emergency conditions
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, drawings and procedures
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly in both written and oral forms
  • Ability to learn technical and operational information quickly and effectively

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $24.00 - $42.00 per hour for the role of Shift Engineer.
