Your Role on the Team

Under supervision, incumbent will assist in the construction, painting and installation of stage scenery, stage machinery, stage lighting, stage sound, stage costumes, stage properties and peripheral devices necessary to the given setting and in accordance with its designed function within the parameters of a given production style and instructional focus of the School. May assist in training student crews for shows and perform other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Ability to read and interpret design and technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of scenic construction techniques using but not limited to the following materials: Wood, steel, plastics, acrylics, natural fabrics, synthetic fabrics, soil, masonry, found objects, chemicals, compressed air, steam, animals, mirrors, optical lenses, electric motors, hydraulic compressors, magnets, rope, cable, high pressure hose, and electro-mechanical controls.
  • Skilled in the use of all hand and power tools including but not limited to: table saw, radial arm saw, skill saw, joiner, band saw, MIG welder, arc welder, cold saw, pneumatic tools, drill press, planer, and crane.
  • Ability to devise and follow power tool maintenance program.
  • Knowledge in the operation, installation and maintenance of theatrical rigging systems.
  • Ability to operate personnel lifts and harness systems and work at considerable height (60' +).
  • Ability to communicate information clearly to faculty, students, and staff working in the Production Studio.
  • Ability to monitor a student's progress on a given project.
  • Knowledge of standard safety procedures as outlined by manufacturer's and University guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships and to interact diplomatically with faculty, researchers, students and the public.
  • Ability to work in a team based, facilitative design environment.
  • A high degree of manual dexterity to work with close tolerances on special shapes e.g., complex curves, conical structures, irregular polygons, custom fabricated machine parts, mechanical gears.
  • Knowledge in the application of coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect scenic surfaces or related surfaces following a given production style or design. Smooth surfaces using sand paper, paint remover, filler, putty, plaster and scrapers. Create interesting textures using sculpty coat, fiberglass, clay, foam, glues, and joint compound.
  • 1-3 years of experience.
