This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-liftorbital launch vehicle capable ofroutinelycarrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar,and beyond.Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designedfrom the beginningto be human-capable.

As a responsible engineer on a small, hardworking, passionate, diverse, and accomplished team of experts, you will perform design, analysis, development, testing, and qualification of propellant tank components for New Glenn Upper Stage. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

  • Structural design, analysis, development, and testing of primary and secondary pressurized structures for the Advanced Upper Stage - Tanks subsystem.
  • Build 3D models, detail part drawings, assemblies, installations, and interface control documents
  • Support configuration development and trade studies
  • Create development plans for novel technologies; including recommendations for lab, subscale, and full scale testing within allocated schedule and budget.
  • Write test plans, specifications, and other documentation for flight hardware.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct tests, then report results and recommend actions.
  • Work with multi-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world class aerospace hardware
  • Provide manufacturing and production support for internal and external organizations, including travel when needed.
  • Support the development and purchase of new equipment and tooling for your hardware.
  • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget and technical status
  • Coach, mentor and technically assist junior engineers
  • Find opportunities for improvements and operational cost savings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 5-7 years of related experience
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Experience delivering hardware for launch vehicles, aircraft, or similar, with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Minimal-mass structure, especially pressure dominated primary structures.
    • Fluid and Thermal management such as baffles, anti-vortex devices, MLI or SOFI.
    • Composite structure manufacturing (e.g., tooling, design for manufacturing, automated fiber placement, NDT).
  • Strong understanding of structural design, analysis principles, and manufacturing processes for composite materials
  • Strong mechanical design skills using Creo, CATIA V5, or similar.
  • Ability to conduct structural analysis using classical hand-calculation and finite element techniques
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis (ASME Y14.5)
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Strong communication skills, with an ability to build consensus among stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A passion for inventiveness and developing world-class engineered products.
  • Experience with fabrication of large-scale composite structures using automated fiber placement (AFP) and tape laying (ATL): ply by ply definition, variable paths and orientations.
  • Expert mechanical design skills using CATIA V5 composites workbench (CGX, CPX, FMX)
  • Demonstrated expertise with any industry standard analysis codes: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer
  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes for rate production
  • Experience with Optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $117,498.00-$164,497.20
