Role and Responsibilities:


Are you a skilled Cook with a passion for food and a love for the outdoors? As a Camp Cook, you'll play a vital role in keeping our campers and staff energized, healthy, and happy-one delicious meal at a time. Join the Camp Harkness team this summer and bring your talents to our vibrant youth camp kitchen!


Meal Preparation & Execution:





    • Prepare and cook balanced, kid-friendly meals for campers and staff, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as occasional snacks or cookout meals.

    • Ensure all food is prepared in accordance with health and safety standards, dietary restrictions, and established menus.

    • Assist with menu planning and food prep timelines in collaboration with the Kitchen Manager.

    • Maintain consistency in taste, portion size, and presentation across meals.




Kitchen Leadership & Teamwork:





    • Supervise and support kitchen assistants, waitstaff, and volunteers during meal prep, service, and cleanup.

    • Delegate tasks efficiently while maintaining a positive, team-oriented work environment.

    • Communicate clearly with kitchen staff and camp leadership about special meals, dietary needs, or schedule changes.




Food Safety & Cleanliness:





    • Adhere to local and state food safety regulations at all times.

    • Oversee safe handling, storage, and labeling of ingredients and leftovers.

    • Ensure proper sanitization of food prep areas, equipment, and utensils.

    • Monitor kitchen inventory and alert management when reordering is needed.




Support Camp Operations:





    • Assist in preparing meals for camp events (cookouts, banquets, theme nights, etc.).

    • Participate in pre-camp kitchen setup and post-camp breakdown/cleanup.

    • Help create a welcoming kitchen culture for campers and staff alike.




Qualifications:



  • Proven experience as a cook in a commercial kitchen, cafeteria, restaurant, or camp setting.

  • Strong knowledge of food safety standards, kitchen operations, and equipment.

  • Proven experience in planning and preparing meals for large groups (50-150+ people).

  • Ability to work well under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.


Preferred Skills:



  • ServSafe or food handler certification (or willingness to obtain).

  • Experience cooking for children or individuals with dietary restrictions (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free, allergies).

  • Leadership experience in a kitchen environment.

  • Enthusiasm for working in a camp or youth-serving setting.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.


Physical & Environmental Demands:



  • Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods.

  • Frequent bending, lifting, and carrying (up to 30 lbs).

  • Working in a hot kitchen environment with exposure to steam and cooking equipment.

  • Occasional outdoor work (setting up outdoor dining or assisting with special events).

  • Must be able to tolerate a camp environment that includes noise, weather changes, and daily activity.

  • Reasonable accommodations can be made.
