Description
UCLA Health is seeking a dynamic and experienced Coding Department Supervisor to oversee a team of certified professional coders within the Physician's Billing Office (PBO). Under the direction of the PBO Coding Director, this role is responsible for ensuring daily production and quality standards are met, managing workflow, supporting training and development, and providing expert guidance in coding practices and compliance. The supervisor will contribute to maintaining efficient operations, uphold federal and institutional regulations, and support continuous performance improvement efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of certified coders including daily work allocation, productivity monitoring, and quality assurance.
  • Provide guidance and support on coding questions, system operations, and administrative tasks.
  • Lead coder training initiatives and performance evaluations.
  • Oversee coder work queues within CareConnect.
  • Act as the point of contact for physician and clinical department coding inquiries.
  • Develop, implement, and refine coding workflows, policies, and job aids in compliance with federal regulations.
  • Conduct regular audits and data analysis to identify coding trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor daily metrics including turnaround time, productivity, and coding accuracy.
  • Lead weekly team meetings and 1:1 staff huddles to discuss performance and upcoming initiatives.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement projects and organizational performance initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze data to support decision-making and improve outcomes.
  • Perform additional administrative or operational duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $63,800 - $127,000/Annually
Qualifications
  • CPC, HCC, CPMA, or CHC certifications preferred
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience and strong expertise in medical coding, billing, and revenue cycle operations
  • Experience with CareConnect and Epic preferred
  • Proficient in ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS coding systems; familiar with CMS, Medicare, and local carrier guidelines, including physician services billing in a teaching hospital setting
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR), preferably UCLA Health systems; advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proven ability to develop training materials, lead teams, and provide education to staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Effective in problem-solving, data analysis, and maintaining confidentiality; able to build collaborative working relationships
  • In-depth understanding of HIPAA, medical terminology, and CMS claim form preparation
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
