Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's NYC, NY, office is looking for an Entry-Level Structural Engineer to join our Vertical Structures team. The successful candidate will learn technical skills and computational software programs necessary to assist in the completion of transportation projects throughout the state and northeast region.

Responsibilities

    Collaborate with numerous VHB staff, clients, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner.
  • Assist engineers with creation of construction documents utilizing CAD and BIM software.
  • Perform structural analysis, design, and detailing tasks of site-civil and building structures as assigned by senior structural engineers.
  • Prepare written documents, summarize information collected by others, and assemble reports.

Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to coordinate design both internally with VHB staff and externally with clients and other design professionals.
  • Exhibits initiative and high attention to precision and accuracy while completing assigned tasks.
  • Able to follow instructions on timelines of deliverables, seek guidance when needed, and escalate issues appropriately if required.
  • Introductory knowledge of design of structural systems using various materials such as steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, etc).
  • Limited experience in completing structural analysis, drafting, and design development tasks at various project stages.

Qualifications

  • Completed degree of B.S. or B.Eng in Civil/Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET accredited program, with a focus in structural coursework. M.S. or M.Eng level degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with drawing production software and BIM software such as AutoCAD, Microstation, and Revit, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis and design software such as RISA 3D, Ram Structural System, Enercalc, and/or SAP2000, is a plus.
  • Introductory knowledge of local and national building-design codes and references such as, but not limited to: NYC Building Code (or International Building Code), ASCE 7, AISC 360, and/or ACI 318, is a plus.
  • Prior internship experience in a structural engineer intern position (especially tasks in relation to building design projects, either new construction or existing buildings retrofit/repair) strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Prior research experience at either the undergraduate or graduate level of study is a plus.
  • 0-1 year of engineering experience and posses a broad understanding and technical skills in structural design.

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York is $77,000 - $87,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
