Overall Purpose:

Under semi-direct supervision during an assigned shift, handles any and all types of trouble calls on overhead or underground transmission, distribution and street lighting systems in an assigned Division.

Job Responsibilities:



  • Investigates faulty overhead or underground equipment, interrupted service, or other situations which may affect the continuity of service.


  • Diagnoses causes of trouble, locating and isolating faults in circuits, transformers, or other electrical distribution, transmission or street lighting equipment and determines the action required to restore service'.


  • Makes minor repairs on faulty overhead equipment, including broken wires and damaged insulators.


  • Isolates and makes minor repairs on faulty underground cables and equipment.


  • Clears or disconnects faulty equipment, performing necessary switching and cutting down of broken live wires which cannot be repaired or makes other corrections in order to eliminate faults or hazards.


  • Replace transformer fuses.


  • Makes necessary instrument tests in locating open or grounded circuits.


  • Performs switching and establishes clearances on the transmission and subtransmission system as directed by the System Operations load dispatcher and performs switching and establishes clearance on the distribution system as directed by the Distribution Center Supervisor all in accordance with safety rules and practices.


  • Isolates faulty customer equipment and suggests method of correction.


  • Performs minor tree trimming work in restoring service or in eliminating conditions which may affect service.


  • Prepares reports on condition of equipment and of work completed suggesting or specifying requirements for restoring or maintaining service.


  • Conducts all work in a safe manner to eliminate all hazards which may endanger the lives of other employees or the public, and acts as safety person for outsiders working in close proximity to Company equipment.


  • Handles 'no service' complaints as assigned.


  • Drives a car or truck traveling to and from job sites.


  • Instructs and directs the work of others assisting in locating and repairing faulty equipment.


  • Performs other work -as required or as assigned.



Education / Experience Requirements;




  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school.


  • Five or more years of experience in construction, operating, and maintenance work, one year of which shall have been as an unrestricted Journey Lineworker supplemented by training in meter, service installation, and cable work.


  • Good understanding of transmission and distribution equipment, its location and of the operation of commonly used electric appliances.


  • Knowledge of wiring safety codes and ordinances and Company service installation rules.


  • Familiarity with metering equipment, street lighting system, service installations, and line and cable work.


  • Must have a State driver's license and pass the Company's driving test.


  • Must have a restricted radio operator's license.


  • Ability to interpret and work from circuit maps.


  • Good judgment and initiative in handling difficult trouble calls.


  • Demonstrated quality of resourcefulness and dependability in handling high voltage.


  • Some indicated ability to instruct and to direct the work of others.
