Twin Cities Orthopedics is seeking experienced applicants for the Head Athletic Trainer position to lead our sports medicine team at the University of St. Thomas. The University of St. Thomas is a NCAA Division I institution located in St. Paul, Minnesota. This position is responsible for overseeing comprehensive patient care of student athletes, as well as fulfilling the administrative responsibilities of the Healthcare Administrator in accordance with NCAA regulations. They will be responsible for budget management, coordination of care with physicians and other practitioners, maintenance of policies and emergency protocols, and compliance with NCAA, conference, university, and company policies. The Head Athletic Trainer will fulfill sport assignment that is to be determined at this time. The Head Athletic Trainer will operate as a liaison for the entire sports medicine team with St. Thomas Athletic Administration. Function as a member of the Twin Cities Orthopedic outreach program.

This is a full-time role working non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel.


Twin Cities Orthopedics is an operating division of Infinite Health Collaborative (i-Health)
Essential functions:

  • Provide leadership and supervision for the athletic training staff, including scheduling, development, and performance evaluations
  • Oversee the daily operation of athletic training facilities and manage medical records in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, university, and company policy
  • Coordinate and communicate with athletic training staff, team physicians, orthopedic specialists, and other healthcare professionals
  • Travel with teams and provide coverage for home and away events, including practices, workouts, and competitions
  • Develop and manage the athletic training budget, including supplies, equipment, and staffing needs
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, university, and company policies and procedures
  • Serve as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches, and medical staff regarding injury status and return to play protocols
  • Responsible for the assessment, treatment, prevention, documentation, and rehabilitation of acute, chronic, and emergency injuries and illnesses
  • Determine athletes' readiness to participate in conjunction with the team physician(s) (i.e., pre-participation evaluation and post-injury/illness return)
  • Communicate daily with coaching staff regarding athletes' readiness and health status
  • Refer student-athletes to team physicians and/or specialists as needed
  • Identify psychosocial intervention needs and refer as necessary
  • Function closely with Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Dietician, and Sports Psych
  • Medical Review Officer for Institutional Drug Testing
  • Maintains records and prepare administrative reports as required by TCO, University, NCAA, Affiliate conferences, OSHA


Additional functions:



  • Provide education and work direction to student interns as assigned
  • Function cooperatively with all other staff, coaches, and department personnel
  • Complete all assigned administrative duties in a timely fashion
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records system ATS
  • Any and all other duties as assigned


Education, experience, & other requirements:



  • Bachelor's Degree Required/ Master's Degree Preferred
  • NATABOC certification
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the state of Minnesota
  • Current CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens certification required
  • 5 + years of collegiate athletic trainer experience preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment with a diverse student population
  • Work non-traditional hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • Complete the Certified Provider Order Entry (CPOE) upon hire if necessary
  • Comply with company policies, procedures, practices and business ethics guidelines.
  • Complete job required training.
  • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations, (e.g. HIPAA, Stark, OSHA, employment laws, etc.)
  • Demonstrate prompt and reliable attendance
  • Work in the clinic during business hours
  • Travel independently throughout the clinic (which may include movement from floor to floor); frequent bending, lifting, standing, stooping or sitting for long periods of time may be required
  • Work at an efficient and productive pace, handle interruptions appropriately and meet deadlines
  • Communicate and interact in a respectful and professional manner
  • Prioritize workload while being flexible to meet the expectations of the daily operations
  • Apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Understand and execute a variety of instructions
  • Effectively operate equipment and communicate on and operate the phone system
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Travel to other work locations, if required
