Summary of Job Duties:A Post Doctoral Fellow position is available in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The laboratory is particularly interested in studying DNA secondary structures in in vitro systems. The structures are called DNA quadruplexes or RNA quadruplexes. The successful candidate will know how to use G-quadruplex prediction software. He/She will also need to have experience in drug design and evaluation. Drug candidates that bind to G-quadruplex are of greatest interest. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing research, general lab maintenance and orderings. Most importantly, the candidate must have experience with methods to detect and define DNA and/or RNA quadruplexes. He/She will be responsible for using biophysical techniques such as NMR, circular dichroism, transient kinetic experiments, and UV temperature change experiments. He/She will also be responsible for conducting research using molecular biology, cell biology and biochemical approaches to understand the role of DNA structures in mechanistic regulation of transcription of telomeric regions of the genome. Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Science or related field of study is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Research: Conduct research, and analyze and evaluate experimental data and interpret results within the scope of work and in relation to the general research program. Prepare standard operating procedures for any new methods used and written reports of laboratory work involved in research projects. Contribute to the design, interpretation and final writing of research publications.
  • Scientific research includes: molecular biology approaches working with DNA, RNA, and proteins, basic cell culture and protein purification, cell biology including Western blotting and immunostaining.
  • General lab organization: Coordinates service support, including the repair of equipment and requisitioning of supplies and research materials
  • Training and supervising work of other research support staff and students
  • Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by reading current research literature and attending and presenting at scientific meetings, seminars and research conferences.
  • Other Duties as Assigned
