We are searching for a driven, enthusiastic part-time intern to join our team. The intern's responsibilities include learning and developing practical skills of our existing technologies, performing technical assessments and providing recommendations, completing tests and assignments, as well as delivering presentations to staff and other stakeholders. You should be well-organized, flexible, and willing to assist wherever possible.

To be successful as an intern, you must have great time management and communication skills; and be willing to fit into the existing staff structure of our ACCESS team. Outstanding interns are those who respond well to constructive feedback, build good relationships with colleagues, and ultimately make a lasting impression.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This role requires interaction with multiple colleagues and internal stakeholders, which may be face-to-face, over the phone, or via email. The varied tasks to be carried out by the apprentice include:


Non-Technical

  • Building professional relationships with colleagues and team members.
  • Attending meetings and actively participating in discussions.
  • Receiving feedback constructively and applying it to future work.
  • Working both in-office and remotely as needed.
  • Assisting in the primary project scope while learning about related technologies.
  • Documenting findings and learnings, with an expectation to present progress at the end of the apprenticeship.
  • Ability to adapt and work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.


Technical

  • Assess and learn the existing C/C++ GUI application, which uses the OpenLook UI framework on Solaris 9.
  • Assist in converting the application to run on Linux using the Motif framework.
  • Gain experience with Linux development environments, including compiling and debugging Java/Java Script, Angular, Spring, and C/C++ applications.
  • Learn about and assist in porting legacy UI frameworks to modern equivalents.
  • Work with version control systems such as Git for managing code changes.
  • Investigate build tools and scripting (e.g., Makefiles, shell scripting) to support the migration effort.
  • Perform routine software testing and debugging under the guidance of a senior engineer.
  • Document migration steps and challenges to contribute to project knowledge.


CORE COMPETENCIES/REQUIREMENTS



  • Pursuing an associate degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of C style programming (C, C++, Java, Python, etc...)
  • Familiarity with Linux environments (e.g., command-line usage, basic scripting).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and apply new technologies.
