POSITION SUMMARY:

The Health Affairs Senior Development Director is responsible for leading and executing the current and long-range plans to build a strong fundraising culture and program that meets annual and long-range goals. Working with the Health Affairs Executive Publisher, the Senior Development Director will design and implement comprehensive and dynamic plans and initiatives that will ensure the success of private and corporate foundation giving, as well as other development initiatives. These goals will be designed to meet and exceed the organization's annual goals for philanthropic revenue, currently $6-7M. This key leader will develop, research, and oversee grant-based funding opportunities, as well as other opportunities for expansion. The Sr. Director will direct and supervise the Health Affairs development staff, currently including the Grants and Contracts Associate. The Sr. Director will also work with senior leadership of Health Affairs and Project HOPE to articulate plans for program expansion based on funding opportunities and organizational priorities.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Develop a strategic plan to support growth while sustaining private and corporate foundation giving initiatives.
  • Oversee a full range of fundraising activities including foundation and corporate grants and new potential areas of development.
  • Direct and supervise the Grants and Contracts Associate, who manages grant applications, deliverables, reports and tracking and who assists with grant writing, research and analysis.
  • Identify and pursue fundraising opportunities and cultivate potential donors by working with Health Affairs editorial leadership and aligning work with sponsorship/advertising and health equity teams.
  • Involve Board members, along with other key staff and volunteers in appropriate fundraising activities, driving program support that achieves the income goals.
  • Manage generation of research and support for fundraising efforts - overall industry analysis, adopting fundraising strategies from other industries, educational programs etc.
  • Lead creation of and direct execution of communication strategy for fundraising.
  • Ensure execution and production of events for fundraising is carried out to the targeted successful conclusion.
  • Modeling organizational values and competencies.
  • Fully understanding the overall financial status of Health Affairs including the budgetary process, ensuring that sound financial controls are in place and that funds are appropriately expended to support organizational strategy and advancement.
  • Ensuring that the Development team operates as a team with shared goals, shared aspirations and high levels of staff engagement in achieving department and organizational goals.
  • Project management skills to drive projects that are essential to the success of the mission from both a strategic and tactical viewpoint.
  • Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • 15+ years' experience as a seasoned leader and development professional in major nonprofit organizations or institutions of higher education or for-profit sector.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising management, supervision, and strategic direction
  • Experience in the cultivation and solicitation of major donors.
  • A broad knowledge of corporate and foundation giving.
  • A creative approach to fundraising and the ability to think beyond the status quo.
  • Proven success in a senior level development position in a complex nonprofit or for-profit organization.
  • Proven success in securing major gifts.
  • Executive presence that recognizes the potential of Health Affairs and is attracted to and can be passionate about its mission.
  • Experience in working with nonprofit and for-profit boards of trustees.
  • Entrepreneurial, pragmatic leadership style.
  • The ability to convey a strong vision in a clear and easily understood way with excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • A broad understanding of the health and health care environment.
  • An ability to work with and command the respect and confidence of leadership, senior management, program staff and development colleagues.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and strong marketing and negotiation skills, along with an ability to work in a complex organization.

  • Manage multiple projects; separating mission critical from the non-strategic; with minimal supervision.
  • Manage issues and challenges with funders as they arise.

Salary range starting at $155,000 USD per year based on candidates residing in the US. Compensation for the role is dependent on several factors including a candidate's location, qualifications, skills, and experience.
