Job Summary

This position will directly contribute to the Comparative Pathology Laboratory's (CPL) comprehensive health surveillance program, with primary responsibilities centered on necropsy and pathology services. In addition, the incumbent will provide secondary support to parasitology, clinical pathology, and serology services as needed to ensure continuity of operations and comprehensive diagnostic coverage.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No Minimum Education required for this position.
  • Knowledge and working experience with the basic principles in animal anatomy and physiology, particularly related to common research species such as rodents and aquatic models.
  • Experience performing gross necropsies and collecting biological specimens for diagnostic assays such as histopathology, serology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, and clinical pathology.
  • Familiarity and experience with standard laboratory procedures and biosafety practices, including aseptic technique and chemical/biological waste disposal.
  • Experience and proficiency in gross tissue trimming and preparation for histopathological processing.
  • Experience and proficiency in accurate data recording and basic data entry into laboratory information management systems.
  • Basic microscopy skills, including the ability to recognize common internal and external parasites in laboratory animal species.
  • Skills to work in a busy, high-throughput diagnostic laboratory and adapt to quicky changing priorities of multiple diagnostic laboratory services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating clinical chemistry and/or hematology analyzers.
  • Proficiency with basic histology workflows, including gross trimming, cassette labeling, and coordinating with histology laboratories for processing/sectioning.
  • Working knowledge of diagnostic testing procedures in parasitology, clinical pathology, and serology.
  • Familiarity with laboratory animal health surveillance programs and IACUC guidelines for humane animal handling and euthanasia.

Department Overview

The Comparative Pathology Laboratory is a diagnostic veterinary medical laboratory at the University of California, Davis with a $2.4 million annual budget. CPL partners with the UC system and and external research community to provide specialized pathology and clinical laboratory services critical for research involving animals.

With strict adherence to established protocols and attention to specimen quality, this position will primarily contribute to the laboratory's health surveillance and anatomic pathology research programs, performing gross necropsies of laboratory animals and processing tissues for histopathological and molecular analysis. In addition to necropsy and pathology support, the individual will provide coverage and technical assistance in parasitology, clinical pathology, and serology workflows on an as-needed basis. This position also includes responsibilities related to laboratory maintenance, equipment care, sample tracking in laboratory information management systems, and hazardous waste management, all in accordance with department, campus, and state safety policies.

Work Environment
