Fire Alarm Mechanic - Offutt AFB, Building 1,000 - Omaha, Nebraska

Position Summary:

This position performs fire alarm system inspections, test alarms, and troubleshoot or document any issues. You will also respond to emergency service calls and ensure the systems are functioning properly.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Installs, repairs, maintains, and adjusts indicating, recording, telemetering, and controlling instruments used to measure and control variables, such as pressure, flow, temperature, motions, force, and chemical composition using hand tools and precision instruments.
  • Troubleshoots equipment in or out of control system and replaces or repairs defective parts.
  • Disassembly and reassembly of controls
  • May calibrate instruments according to established standards.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs installed fire alarm detection and suppression systems in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and the national Fire Protection Association standards.
  • Inspects fire alarm equipment and replaces defective components.
  • Tests initiating and signal circuits, detectors, and system transmitter and makes needed repairs.
  • Checks pressure gauges on suppression system storage containers and recharges or replaces containers.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and inspections on Fire Alarm Systems.
  • Flexible scheduling to include on-call rotations, occasional overtime, and some weekend work.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested.


Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience; NICET certification preferred (requires prior experience or training)
  • Must be proficient in all conventional and addressable Fire Alarm Control Panels (FACP's).
  • Must have knowledge and experience in Mass Notification Systems.
  • Must have knowledge of fire alarm components.
  • Must be proficient in troubleshooting Fire Alarm circuitry and components.
  • Must have knowledge of radio signals / speaker systems.
  • Must have knowledge of low voltage circuitry.
  • Must have experience in using AC/DC voltage meters.
  • Working knowledge of National Electric Codes (NEC), National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Codes and Standards at a minimum NFPA 70 & 72, NFPA 110, NFPA 99, and NFPA 101
  • Must have knowledge and experience in performing preventative maintenance and inspections on Fire Alarm Systems.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in Dry Pipe Sprinkler Systems, Wet Pipe Sprinkler Systems and Pre-action Sprinkler Systems.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.



Communication Skills:

Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, managers, and staff members. Ability to write reports. Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, fellow employees, and customers.

Reasoning Ability:

Must be able to read and interpret various information to ensure procedures are followed.

Physical Demands:

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may occasionally be required to lift more than 75 pounds. The employee must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

Work environment will require on-call rotation. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold, heat, and inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices, such as respirators, masks, goggles, and/or gloves.

A background check and drug screen will be conducted for this position.
