I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
Facilities, Buildings & Grounds ( FBG) is currently seeking a Plumber for the day shift to help support the Universities mission in education. FBG is a part of GW's Facilities, Planning and Construction Management Division, which maintains GW's property and grounds on all three campuses. Reporting to a Zone Manager, the Plumber typically is responsible for proper operation of all systems and equipment. The Plumber position may lead plumbing maintenance programs including required repairs, renovations and preventative maintenance so that the primary university mission is upheld.

The desired candidate must be trained in all plumbing applications and systems, highly organized, and takes pride in his/her work and can perform various customer service duties as required throughout the day. The work Schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm and is subject to on-call assignments, after normal business hours and a rotating schedule to include Holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Other responsibilities may include but not limited to:

  • Plans, implements, and administers a preventative maintenance program(s) to provide maximum life to facilities in accordance with industry standards.
  • Knowledge of plumbing systems in commercial residential and academic buildings.
  • Knowledge of how to troubleshoot plumbing domestic hot water system.
  • Coordinates and facilitates walkthrough inspections and due diligence investigations.
  • Provides regular verbal/written reports to the Facility Zone Manger.
  • Ability to communicate with employees regarding plumbing best practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of how to use plumbing trade tools, such as snake mashing, jet washing, and pro-press tools; knowledge of grease trap and sewage pump systems, backflow prevention, and of occupational hazards, safety precautions, local codes, and regulations pertaining to Plumbing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of FPCM goals and objectives, policies and procedures, as well as ability to work and communicate effectively in a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Schedules Plumbing work orders with GW stakeholders and performs inspections for quality control on contractor assignments.
  • Advises administrators on possible alternatives to proposed Plumbing projects and equipment purchases.
  • Provides instructions and assistance in the solution of work-related problems and in the performance of specific Plumbing related tasks.


Performs other work-related duties as requested. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the lead from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/ GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to understand and review architectural drawings and the related mechanical drawings, to include As-built.
  • Graduation from a trades school (or the completion of a certified Plumbing licensed program) with emphasis in Plumbing/gas fitting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in the plumbing trade is preferred. A working knowledge of building and plumbing codes is preferred.
  • Ability to make material take offs and time allotments to complete Plumbing related projects.
  • Knowledge in the use of mathematics, formulas, and some design ability of building Plumbing systems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Competent communication and correspondence skills. The Plumber should understand the District of Columbia building codes.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population to include students, faculty, staff, and external contractors and vendors.
  • Ability to utilize and manage work order ticket systems using Assestworks or other Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Knowledge of safe work practices based on industry standards, injury and illness prevention practices is preferred.
  • DC Journeyman Plumbing License is preferred. Reciprocity will be accepted.

Hiring Range $24.09 - $37.48
