JOB SUMMARY: A pipefitter who has 4 or more years of experience with laying out, assembling, installing, and maintaining pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating , sprinkling, and industrial production and processing systems as required for new construction or maintenance, applying knowledge of system operation and following blueprints with the use of occasional supervision and while always adhering to industry safety standards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Selects type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications 2. Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipe will not cause structural weakness 3. Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers 4. Cuts, threads and bends pipe 5. Assembles and installs variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings including: iron, steel, copper and plastic 6. Connects pipe using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints 7. Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers 8. Installs and maintains hydraulic and pneumatic components of machines and equipments such as pumps, and cylinders 9. Follows lockout/tagout procedures to shut down equipment according to OSHA requirements and company safety rules 10. Sets up and operates various pipe cutting, bending, and threading machinery 11. Bends, cuts, threads, shapes, fabricates, and installs pipe according to job specifications 12. Cuts and bores holes in structures such as walls and fixtures before pipe installation; attaches pipes to walls and structures 13. Installs various types of installation and pipe covering; removes and disposes of old coverings in line with the company hazardous waste procedures and EPA and OSHA requirements 14. Makes hydraulic pressure test of piping installations. Checks and adjusts controls, gauges, and valves to achieve control of flow or pressure 15. Inspects and maintains facility piping systems, heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems, water treatment and sewer systems, and burners and heaters. Reports deficiencies and corrects problems 16. Posts and keeps up to date records of piping systems and controls. Posts records of safety checks and inspection dates of assigned equipment 17. Performs other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 1. Replace existing piping systems to original design and pressure requirements 2. Install new piping systems using NavSea Drawings and Tech Manuals 3. Effective planning and layout skills to minimize material waste 4. Advance use of power tools and machinery associated with pipe fitting 5. Advanced level of skill in blueprint reading and material requirements 6. Advanced knowledge of joint design and fit up requirements IAW Mil-Std 22D 7.Advanced knowledge of requirements for pipe bending IAW Mil-Std 1627C 8. Expert at setting up hydrostatic testing equipment to shipboard and shop piping systems, including trouble shooting 9. Thorough knowledge of QA requirements and checkpoints 10. Expert at recognizing and resolving problems encountered while making shipboard piping runs, i.e. interference, existing piping damage, valve leak by etc. 11. Expert at material requirements, pipe/fitting size identification, pressure requirements 12. Advanced knowledge of piping support and hanger spacing requirements 13. Highly motivated and able to supervise 2-3 small crews, (fitter, welder, helper, fire watches) simultaneously 14. Qualify as a tack welder 15. Ability to use and read calibrated measuring equipment, (micrometers, 0-6" dial calipers, etc.) 16. Advanced ability to setup and use power tools, (threader, bender, hydro pump, etc.) 17. Advanced knowledge of hand tools and usage 18. Advanced knowledge of power tool safety and inspection prior to use 19. Proper procedures for running gas and electrical leads, (drop test, chaffing at doors and accesses, etc.) 20. Advanced knowledge of piping systems and their hazards, (CHT, Fuel, O2, Hydraulics, etc.) 21. Advanced knowledge of system requirements such as cleaning and draining prior to breaching or opening system 22. OSHA and shipyard requirements prior to commencing work on any piping system 23. Advanced knowledge of Std Items for welding, testing, maintaining cleanliness, etc. 24. Advanced knowledge of NSTM Chapter 505 for piping systems 25. Ability to submit and initiate WAF's 26. Ability to submit and PAI hot work JOB REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school diploma or GED and 4 or more years of related experience in field or equivalent combination of education and experience in field 2. Ability to gain access to military installations 3. Must pass drug test and background check PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds 2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:
CRITERIA FOR ADVANCEMENT: 1. Qualify in Grades 4 and 5 silver braze 2. Qualify as MAF installer/inspector 3. Workmanship in piping system fitups 4. Good knowledge of workmanship requirements IAW Mil- Stds, (22D, 2035, 278, 248, etc.) 5. Ability to identify and resolve on site non-critical issues 6. Ability to manage and assign personnel 7. Ability to identify deficiencies and document on CFR 8. Ability to investigate and submit required reports 9. Exceptional attendance 10. Ability to work without supervision 11.
