Summary: The Audiology Department at Christus Children's Hospital in San Antonio, TX will be offering one 4th year externship position to begin in early June and end the following May. This 11-month rotation is completed under a primary preceptor, but the extern will have the opportunity to work with multiple pediatric audiologists and multi-disciplinary teams. This is a full-time position with a clinical emphasis. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, flexible, a strong team player, and has a strong desire for a career as a pediatric audiologist. The goal of this externship is to provide clinical experiences to develop the skills necessary for a career as a pediatric audiologist.
Responsibilities:
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- As a Doctor of Audiology extern, you can expect to apply your previous clinic experiences to assess a diverse pediatric population including children who are multiply complex.
- Externs will be exposed to all aspects of pediatric audiological evaluation and case management.
- The extern will become competent in diagnostic skills such as visual reinforcement audiometry, conditioned play audiometry, standard audiometry, acoustic immittance, otoacoustic emissions as well as natural sleep and sedated auditory brainstem response (ABR) evaluations.
- The extern will also have the opportunity to participate in rehabilitative care such as traditional hearing aids, CROS hearing aids, bone-conduction hearing aids (non-surgical and surgical), and cochlear implants.
- The audiology extern is expected to work within a multi-disciplinary team on a daily basis. This includes but is not limited to, physicians, physician assistants, nurses, educational specialists, clinical staff, and community partners.
- After the 3-6 month onboarding period, students will perform baby ABRs, audiometric assessments, and rehabilitative appointments. They would be in the clinic 5 days a week.
- To get the full clinical experience, students will also experience ABRs in the OR and sedation room, as well as participate in Cochlear implant appointments with direct supervision.
It is required that each applicant have passed their Praxis exam, have a signed affiliation agreement between Christus Children's and the university, have proof of liability insurance through their university, and have obtained a Texas State Intern in Audiology license prior to the clinical start date.
