Join our team at Terex Utilities and embark on an exciting opportunity as we seek a skilled and dedicated Quality Technician to contribute to the Terex team in Watertown, SD.

What you'll do

The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) ensures products meet welding codes, standards, and specifications before release. They oversee testing procedures, conduct audits, and document inspection results to maintain quality and compliance. By recommending testing at various production stages, they help identify issues early, minimizing waste and improving efficiency.

Working closely with operations and engineering teams, the CWI develops and validates Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs). They also play a key role in workforce development by overseeing weld testing, leading training sessions, and writing welder qualifications for both new and existing team members.

  • Safe and positive approach to daily standard work.
  • Understanding of weld inspection equipment and their applications. Ability to inspect welds using these tools and other methods.
  • Basic knowledge of various forms of NDT, specifically MT and PT with the ability to apply these methods.
  • Ability to advise and train the Terex Utilities team on structural welding per AWS D1.1 and Terex Weld Quality Standards, including documentation for and supervision of weld repair.
  • Effectively communicate problems and solutions at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to navigate multiple codes and standards such as AWS D1.1, AWS D1.2, AWS D14.9 along with design requirements as specified by Terex.
  • Verify that welding procedures, materials, and techniques adhere to relevant welding codes, specifications, and Terex Standards.
  • Review supplier-based weld documentation, material certification, and process specifications to ensure compliance with Terex Design and Quality Standards.
  • Work closely with Engineering by advising/recommending welding fundamentals, processes used, joint geometry or other welding related topics during design process or when aiding in design resolution or in current welding issues.
  • Perform failure analysis functions on welds, determine root cause of the issue, and suggest/apply solutions to the problem.
  • Perform Audits/Inspections on weldments at various stages throughout the facility.
  • Write non-conformances and notify correct departments.
  • Issue red tags and apply/aid quarantine efforts.
  • Identify and drive internal quality and safety improvements.
  • Work with Operations team to resolve issues and put in countermeasures to prevent future recurrences. Improve/modify test procedures as required.
  • Other Job duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements of the job are classified as medium to heavy. Physical demand requirements are more than light work. Medium to heavy work is defined as:

  • 10 to 40 pounds of force frequently, may include pushing, pulling and lifting.
  • 40 to 100 pounds of force occasionally with assistance of machinery or others to move objects.
  • Ability to stand on concrete for 10+ hours per shift.
  • Ability to access the truck, above, below, and all around the truck.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crawl, and access the same areas as required by welders.
  • Ability to climb using ladders, access steps, or platforms as required by welders.

What you'll bring

  • AWS QC1Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) registered with the American Welding Society (AWS)
  • Preferred formal training in NDT methods - UT, PT, MT etc.
  • Proficient in reading blueprints, schematics, and other types of engineering/manufacturing drawings.
  • Possess good mechanical aptitude.
  • Function as a team member and contribute to group goals while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision in a responsible manner.
  • Recognize potential safety hazards and take appropriate actions to minimize risks.
  • Maintain the integrity of confidential business and product information.
  • Ability to operate Machinery such as: Cranes, Bandsaws, Ironworkers, hydraulic press, punch-press, nibblers.
  • Ability to operate steel cutting equipment such as: Plasma torch, Oxy-fuel Torch.
  • Ability to operate CAC-G (Air Carbon Arc Cutting and Gouging).
  • Ability to operate Welding machines.
  • Ability to teach in a classroom setting.
  • Possess high attention to detail.
  • Experienced with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Able to create and implement effective documentation as required.
  • Basic understanding of iPads/digital applications.
  • Ability to investigate problems, determine root cause, and suggest or implement effective solutions.

The compensation range for this position is $26.00-$33.00 per hour. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc.
