PHA, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health (JHIPH), seeks a talented and proven Planetary Health Alliance Marketing &Communications Managerwith experience in, or relevant to, Planetary Health to develop and lead a multi-channel communications strategy for PHA. This strategy will focus both on conveying the work of PHA and our international community and on shaping the global narrative about the Earth crisis by highlighting Planetary Health strategies and tools to address society's most pressing challenges. This position will be responsible for executing the strategy, tactics, and plans, and tracking and reporting results.

The Communications managerwill report to PHA's Program Director and will work closely with JHIPH's Communications Officer. The Officer will also have close contact with the University and school-level communications team leaders to ensure priorities and deliverables are aligned and promoted in a coordinated manner.

This role is based in Washington, DC, with the expectation of spending 3 days per week at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center (555 Pennsylvania Ave NW).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, refine, and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to promote PHA and to foster communication among the participants of our global community.
  • Collaborate on PHA's leadership role in establishing the narrative shift to recognize the Earth crisis as a global health and humanitarian crisis and to mainstream Planetary Health. This will be done with strategic partners and JHIPH's Communications Officer.
  • Oversee, and directly contribute to, the creation of original content across a variety of channels and platforms, including articles, news releases, social media posts, a monthly newsletter, and others as agreed upon.
  • Manage media and influencer relations for PHA, including proactive outreach to reporters, responding to media inquiries, and coordinating opportunities with member and partner organizations.
  • Lead communications strategy and coordinate media relations outreach plans for internal and external events"live, hybrid and virtual"including the Planetary Health Annual Meeting (PHAM).
  • Leverage and enhance PHA tools (e.g., interactive website, HubSpot CRM, Hylo online platform, newsletter) to engage and expand membership.
  • Support PHA program teams with communications expertise.
  • Write, design, edit, and produce reports, news releases and media advisories, infographics, announcements, campaigns, brochures, and other documents to capture the breadth and depth of the Alliance's work, including maintaining an up-to-date web presence.
  • Write and refine op-eds, talking points, key messages, media pitches, presentations, and other communications and marketing materials in collaboration with staff, Planetary Health leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Support the promotion and dissemination of PHA reports and publications, including developing and monitoring production schedules.
  • Supervise Communications Specialist and any Communications Interns/Fellows, providing mentorship and guidance.
  • Develop, manage, and implement the communications budget for PHA.
  • Develop and manage communications contracts and agreements, including support from vendors.
  • Lead efforts to measure results (including media monitoring) and report on the impact of PHA's communications strategies to leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Monitor trends and knowledge in policy communications, science communications, and environmental advocacy to continuously improve PHA's approach.
  • Manage crisis communications planning and response.
  • Travel occasionally to conferences and events hosted by member institutions, occasionally present at public speaking opportunities.
  • Ensure all communications comply with the University Branding Guidelines and JHU Use of Name Guidelines.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 10 years of experience in communication, marketing, or related field.
  • Experience leading a communications team.
  • Experience in environmental or climate change policy or advocacy.
  • Proven ability in communication strategy development and implementation.
  • At least five years' experience working with digital and social media platforms, along with website management.
  • Experience working with journalists, developing pitches, and successfully developing and placing stories in high-impact media or publications.
  • Active current contacts and positive relationships among journalists who cover the environment, public health, and adjacent fields.
  • Experience working internationally or with international partners.
  • Excellent writing, content development, and presentation skills with proven ability to communicate scientific evidence to a wide audience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including relationship building and stakeholder management.
  • Strong demonstrated interest in using communications to advance equity, evidence, and policy.
  • Graphic design and video editing, a plus.
  • Experience managing high profile donor communications.
  • Experience effectively managing vendors projects, relationships, and contracts.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
