LAW INTERN LAW DEPARTMENT CITY OF WORCESTER The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for a Law Intern to join the fast-paced, high-volume collaborative and congenial Law Department. Under the direction of the Deputy City Solicitor, the Law Intern (Intern II, Work Study) will work within the Law Department under the guidance of attorneys or legal professionals to assist with various tasks, such as conducting legal research, drafting documents, organizing case files, and attending meetings or court proceedings. Interns gain exposure to legal practices and procedures while honing their analytical, organizational, and communication skills. The role requires confidentiality and attention to detail. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
- Conduct legal research on municipal codes, ordinances, regulations, statutes and legal topics.
- Analyze legal issues affecting the city, boards and commissions, city administration, city council, public contracts, or liability concerns.
- Prepare legal documents in support of litigation, such as pleadings, discovery requests and responses, deposition outlines, motions, and memorandums.
- Prepare legal documents in support of advice & counsel attorneys, including but not limited to, contracts, contract amendments, leases, transactional documents, legal opinions.
- Assist in drafting ordinances or amendments to existing ordinances, laws, and local option statues.
- Organize and maintain case files related to municipal litigation or legal disputes.
- Review and summarize case law or precedents relevant to municipal matters.
- Attend city meetings or hearings to observe and assist in analyzing and interpreting legal matters
- Assist in reviewing and updating municipal policies to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint familiarity with SharePoint helpful
- Ability to maintain professionalism under all circumstances
- Strong research and analytical abilities to review legal documents and case law.
- Proficiency in using Westlaw to perform legal research
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for drafting memos, briefs, and correspondence.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment
- Commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Familiarity with legal terminology and practices.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Enrollment in or recent graduation from a law school
- Completion of foundational coursework in areas like contracts, torts, or civil procedure.
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Skilled in using Westlaw to perform legal research
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Six (6) months of experience working/volunteering in an office setting
- Previous internships, clerkships, or work experience in a law office or legal setting
- Participation in law school activities like moot court or law review
