Position: Research Assistant, Cancer

Location: Boston, MA

Schedule: 40 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

The research assistant position is in the Lowery Lab. We study the cell biological mechanisms of cell movement, with projects that range from axon guidance and neuronal development to cancer metastasis and melanoma. Please check out lowerylab.org for more information about the lab and the research that we do. The Research Assistant will perform research activities using approved techniques.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Performs experiments, as directed, including procedures and assays involving Xenopus (frog) adults and primary cells. Prepares reagents, cultures, vials, slides, etc. Communicates results of experiments to the PI and laboratory personnel.

  • Collects and processes samples from Xenopus (frog) cell culture, animal, or stored specimens using universal safety precautions. Ensures that prepared samples are stored according to protocol.

  • Ensures that data is collected, documented, and reported properly. Maintains accuracy and integrity of data.

  • Assists in data analysis and experimental protocol design and implementation, as needed.



  • Monitors lab equipment to ensure they function properly. Arrange for service or re-certification, as required. Maintain inventory of supplies and place orders, as needed.

  • Maintains a safe work environment by routinely autoclaving lab waste and experimental materials. Reports all incidents, safety hazards, or accidents to PI or appropriate personnel.

  • Provides training and/or guidance to students who may be assigned to work in the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.

  • Manages lab organization and business, through close collaboration with PI.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required by time of hire.

EXPERIENCE:


  • Prefer experience in clinical research, public health experience or working with children and families.

  • Previous experience with recruiting subjects, with an understanding of the ethical and technical conduct of research preferred


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).

  • Bilingual candidate preferred, not required, fluent in spoken and written English, Spanish, and/or Haitian Creole.

  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of social, racial and ethnic populations.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web browsers. Experience with statistical software a plus.

  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.


This position is grant funded through 6/30/2026. There may be opportunity beyond this grant funding for position integration into ongoing operations.
