Radio Telescope Specialist

The University of Virginia is seeking a Radio Telescope Specialist to help deploy and commission the Jefferson Trust Radio Telescope (JTRT). This is a Lab Tech 2 level position. The JTRT is a new 5-meter radio telescope that will be sited at the University of Virginia's Fan Mountain Observatory (FMO), which is located approximately 20 miles south of Charlottesville.

Job Description

The Radio Telescope Specialist will help PI Johnson and other Instrumentation Group members in the Astronomy Department execute the JTRT project. This is a full-time position with a University of Virginia benefits package including paid leave, paid holidays, a range of health, dental and vision plan options, wellness programs and more.

The employee in this position will help with the following tasks:

• test radio telescope instrumentation in the laboratory,
• install the JTRT at FMO,
• run commissioning observations, and
• analyze the commissioning data.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

• A bachelor's degree in physics, astrophysics, or astronomy. Work experience in a related field may be considered sufficient.
• An understanding of radio astronomy and radio telescope instrumentation.
• Some experience working in a laboratory.

Physical Demands

This position will require working in a laboratory and working outside at Fan Mountain Observatory.

The anticipated salary for this position is $22 per hour.
