Job Purpose

Overall responsibility for the development and delivery of all phases of strategically critical, high dollar value, complex major projects or programs, ensuring project success factors are met, while maintaining or enhancing the reputation of National Grid. These include but are not limited to scope, schedule, cost, quality, environmental, safety, communications, and security. Take ownership of overall coordination of internal and external teams carrying out project development, engineering & design, construction, commissioning and effective handover of the assets. Additionally, this position is highly involved in business case development, budget, and funding management.

These projects will typically be very large in dollar value, have significant regulatory and stakeholder exposure, are at the heart of New York's clean, fair and affordable energy transition ambition, and will make a significant contribution to National Grid's growth expectation.

The Project Director will join the Major Projects (MP) leadership team reporting directly to the Vice President and be in a role that has significant strategic, commercial, decision making, and leadership responsibilities. The Project Director will work closely with other MP Directors, as well as Directors and the Executive team across the National Grid business. This individual will play a key role in setting the standard for the management and delivery of Major Projects throughout the organization.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead and develop a high performing team of internal and contract project management professionals.
  • Drive a project safety culture to achieve and uphold the highest levels of Health & Safety.
  • Full accountability for the development, delivery and successful completion of high value and complex infrastructure projects safely, on schedule, within authorized budget, and of high quality.
  • Establish, develop, and provide guidance, direction, and leadership to the project team while ensuring resources meet budget and business plan objectives.
  • Develop, administer and manage detailed budgets and investment plans while undertaking regular cost and productivity analysis to track and evaluate performance.
  • Provide critical inputs in developing contract and procurement strategies to ensure the projects are executed to deliver to the strategic driver for a specific program (schedule, budget, quality, etc.).
  • Establish and maintain communications among all project stakeholders ranging from project status reports, team meetings, executive communications, and external stakeholder communications.
  • Ensure compliance with Major Projects BMS requirements, the project management process, and prudency and regulatory requirements working in partnership with team members, stakeholders, and contractors to meet defined targets, standards, and budgets.
  • Develop and obtain approval on business cases for the projects with executive leadership, ensuring each project is in full alignment with regulatory framework. This will require presentations to Senior/Executive Management.
  • Implement industry practice risk management framework to deliver all agreed outputs within the project budget and appropriate regulatory framework, conduct project reviews, and take ownership of identifying opportunities to deliver further efficiencies.
  • Direct and integrate the activities of multiple, major project operations; ensuring that project efforts are cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting National Grids vision, goals, and strategic plan.
  • Be accountable to create an inclusive environment which drives continuous improvement and excellence across National Grid, strengthening the Major Projects team.
  • Operate as the key interface and establish collaborative communication channels with all high influence stakeholders, both internal and external, contractors, regulatory agencies, etc.
Knowledge, Experience and Technical Know How Requirements
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline with a considerable breadth and depth of proven experience in construction project / program and contract management.
  • Proven record of ensuring a team has capability to successfully manage project schedules and complex risks across a large project and program, translating high level project milestones into program level schedules and proactively identifying risk mitigation/recovery plans for execution to deliver projects safely, on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to set safety behaviors and expectations for projects which effectively creates a culture with safe execution at the heart of the delivery approach.
  • Expert Presentation Skills capable of presentation to Senior/Executive Leadership.
  • Extensive experience leading teams to deliver large, complex projects and/or programs of work, enabling teams to operate innovatively, effectively, and efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of leading and influencing large diverse teams, and gaining support and commitment from a wider operational group.
  • Proven ability to take calculated risks in making and owning decisions.
  • Customer and external management experience; able to influence external customers, agencies, regulators, communities and other external stakeholders.
  • Experience leading diverse teams through change and business improvement within a complex organization/program or project.
  • Strong commercial acumen with proven experience successfully managing complex and high value commercial arrangements, including setting up, negotiating, and managing large contracts and negotiating change orders.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience supporting large scale projects ($500M - $1B+) is required, with 10+ years of experiencebeingpreferred.
  • Extensive experience in management and delivery of construction projects (5 yrs minimum, 10 years preferred)
  • Evidenced experience in successful delivery of large-scale capital portfolio of projects ($500M - $1B+ preferred)
  • Project Management Professional Certification preferred. If the successful candidate does not have this certification at the time of application, it will be expected to be obtained.
  • Avalid driver's license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policyis required.

Upstate, NY:$180,000 - $212,000

Downstate, NY:$217,000 - $255,000

Massachusetts:$202,000 - $238,000
