Widener University is currently seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a focus in structural engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering. Reporting to the department Chair, this role provides support to the civil engineering program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:



  • Teaching: Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in civil engineering, including but not limited to structures and materials laboratories, structural analysis, reinforced concrete design, and steel design. Advise senior capstone design projects. Teach general engineering courses including but not limited to statics, dynamics, and mechanics of deformable bodies.
  • Research: Conduct research within the candidate's area of expertise, leading to publications in reputable journals and presentations at professional conferences. Pursue external funding and establish an independent and sustainable research program. Actively seek and foster collaborations within the department, across disciplines, and externally with other institutions and industry partners. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students engaged in research.
  • Service: Contribute to outreach and student recruitment efforts. Provide academic advising and support to students. Assist with ABET assessment and evaluation. Participate in faculty self-governance by serving on school level and university level committees. Engage in department and school meetings, as well as other academic activities.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:



  • A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in teaching.
  • Strong research background with a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Demonstrated ability to develop grant proposals to pursue external funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a diverse academic environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional engineering licensure or eligibility for licensure.


Preferred:



  • Experience in industry or consulting related to Civil Engineering


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:



  • May teach graduate class scheduled in evening
  • May participate in outreach and recruiting events held on weekends
