Job Summary

This is a clinical position where the incumbent performs neuro-diagnostic testing including EEG studies in both the outpatient ambulatory and inpatient settings. Incumbent must be technically adept, have excellent patient care and customer service skill sets, and be able to work with severely ill pediatric patient populations.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs EEG Testing and related or separate neuro-diagnostic testing, services, procedures and techniques on outpatients and inpatients as assigned
  • Assists medical providers in performing special procedures as assigned
  • Performs inter-operative EEG under the direct supervision of neurologists
  • Documents all services performed in applicable medical records system
  • Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record and obtains additional information by questioning
  • Files recordings and enters file data in the computer database
  • Timely charge for proper procedures through electronic medical records (EMR) system
  • Inspects and assures proper maintenance of all equipment and make minor repairs when possible
  • Keeps equipment in a clean operating condition
  • Serves as a resource to other staff members and medical providers as it relates to diagnostic testing and services provided in the Clinic
  • Prepares patient, including those under Intensive Care
  • Properly uses the international 10/20 electrode measurement and placement
  • Recognizes wake & sleep stages along with abnormal testing results and seizure patterns
  • Applies a variety of Bio-Potential Electrodes as required
  • Obtains standard recordings and recognize and eliminate causes of electrical interference and other artifacts
  • Describes and documents all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test
  • Uses activating procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep
  • When indicated by the circumstances of the EEG recording, monitors on the same apparatus other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiograms, electroculograms, respirations, etc.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Performs and complies with on-call duties as described in the Departmental Policy and Procedures Manual.
  • Scans EEG Tracings and annotates areas of concern for physician review.
  • Maintains the quality of long-term patient studies.
  • Arranges for equipment repair and servicing. Notifies supervisor of any major repairs that are needed.
  • Keep supply cabinet and work spaces in a clean and orderly condition
  • Attends available departmental in-services, identifies learning needs and participates in developing annual goal plan, participates in applicable conferences and/or technical meetings, and maintains educational record.
  • May be assigned to perform testing in satellite facilities as needed
  • Promotes a constructive and positive work atmosphere by demonstrating a cooperative team approach
  • Participates actively in departmental meetings
  • Is aware of and abides by work schedule and breaks to meet departmental coverage needs
  • Relieves and provides support to other team members
  • Offers suggestions on how to solve technical and operational problems
  • Performs other related technical and support functions as needed
  • Actively participates in departmental quality initiatives
  • Assists management in the development and review of policies, procedures, standard work, gathering/monitoring of statistical data and other related functions that contribute to the operations of the Neurology Clinic

  • Monitors wait times for patients and intervenes to address any prolonged waits
  • Promotes and demonstrates positive/professional and customer-oriented communication to patients/families. Ability to identify potentially volatile situations and seek additional resources as appropriate.

  • Communicates all pertinent information, findings, problems, concerns, or ideas to physician in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to culturally diverse patient/family populations
Decision-Making Required: Ability to independently analyze, resolve and/or present alternative solutions to short-term and long-range problems/issues
Problem-Solving Required: Demonstrates effective problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize work that needs to be accomplished, develop a plan to get work completed, and to re-adjust a plan based on changing information.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to learn and retain moderate to high level technical skills
  • Demonstrates effective problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize work that needs to be accomplished, develop a plan to get work completed, and is able to re-adjust a plan based on changing information.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of legal issues related to patient care, patient confidentiality, patient safety, and the Patient Bill of Rights
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to work with ill and uncooperative children.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Southeast Asian languages preferred.
Technical Knowledge:
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill of technical expertise.
  • Proficient in the use of clinical software programs, including trouble shooting software problems
  • Ability to document required patient information on the clinic record accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to comply with infection control standards
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development in completing EEG job responsibilities.
  • Utilizes the appropriate equipment and developmental approach in completing job duties
  • Performs other related duties as required
Physical Requirements:
  • Sit: Up to 6 hours/day
  • Stand/Walk: 4-6 hours
  • Bend/Stoop: Up to 6 hours
  • Reach: Up to 6 hours
  • Rep Use of UE: Up to 6 hours
  • Lift/Push/Pull: 50 pounds, over 50 pounds with assistance or equipment
  • This job requires the ability to hear alarms, clients and/or instruction. The ability to see accurately from 20 inches to 20 feet. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $60.42 - $75.28 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Graduate from an accredited training program in Neurodiagnostics is preferred, however, a combination of education and on-the-job training may be accepted in lieu of an accredited training program.
Education Notes: Preparatory coursework in sciences such as biology, anatomy, physiology and/or chemistry
Minimum Experience: At least two (2) years of experience as an EEG Technologist.
License Required: N/A
Certification Required: Current American Heart BLS Certification Required

Registration Required: Registration from the American Board of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists (ABRET) as a Registered EEG Technologist (R.EEG T.)
Medical Staff Membership Required: N/A
