Job Summary

The Academic Superintendent works with the principals and staff to support instructional programs at the elementary or secondary school level, oversees instructional practices which focus on high student achievement, and builds positive school climates that support the whole student. Interprets data, identifies scientifically, research-based instruction strategies, oversees the professional development for instructional staff and evaluates the effectiveness of the instructional practices. Serves as the link between the assigned schools and other District programs, services and the community. Serves, represents and exercises the authority of the District Superintendent in directing the implementation of the MPS secondary instructional programs, services and general operations.

Located in southeastern Wisconsin, MPS is the largest school district in the state, serving approximately 68,000 students. MPS is committed to accelerating student achievement, building positive relationships between youth and adults, and cultivating leadership at all levels. U.S. News and World Report rated five MPS high schools among the best in the state in the spring of 2024. The Class of 2024 earned more than $113 million in scholarships and grants. The District has about 9,590 employees, and a budget of $1.47 billion in total revenues and expenditures. Education is provided in 156 buildings, including 21 bilingual schools, five of Wisconsins top high schools, eight public Montessori schools, and 11 International Baccalaureate schools. The diverse population includes students speaking 81 native languages.

Salary Range: $$145,696 $189,332

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • Position requires a masters degree in an educational field, a doctorate is preferred.
  • Position requires a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction license #51 (Principal). A superintendents license is preferred.
  • Drivers license (must have personal transportation available).

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of seven to ten years of administrative or management experience that includes instructional leadership, planning, evaluation and assessment.
  • Demonstrated human resources and fiscal management skills, including understanding of multi-fund budget and finance procedures/practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in database decision-making and the ability to collect and analyze data electronically.
  • Considerable experience (no less than five years) as a school administrator in increasingly responsible positions.
  • Experience with building successful partnerships with businesses, community agencies, K-12 schools and higher education.
