About the Role:

Capital One is looking for a strategic, creative and results-driven communications professional to join our Public Affairs team. Public Affairs is a cross-functional organization within Capital One's External Affairs team that leverages best practices across public relations, marketing, political engagement, government affairs and digital campaign advocacy to enable business growth and mitigate risk.

As a key member of the Public Affairs team, you will help develop and contribute to creative communications campaigns that drive awareness around Capital One's core business impact and values among decision maker audiences. In this role, you will work cross-functionally with Corporate Communications, Government Relations, Community Impact and Investment and various lines of business to identify earned media, storytelling and external engagement opportunities in service of deepening goodwill and fostering a better understanding of the issues impacting Capital One. You will play a critical role in project management and stakeholder coordination, partnering not only with teams across the company but also with national and regional media, think tanks, non-profits groups, civic leaders and political influencers. You will provide real-time, strategic counsel to senior leaders, influence alignment with external stakeholders and support the execution of a wide range of communications initiatives, including enterprise storytelling, earned media, events and convenings, research, owned content and digital advertising strategies.

This position requires exceptional judgment, creative problem solving, attention to detail, action orientation and results focus. A knack for understanding and explaining complex policy issues and a curiosity about perspectives different from your own are essential to the success of this role. Humility, adaptability and a sense of humor will also serve you well.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to and support strategic campaigns that advance favorable business, reputation and policy outcomes across all levels of government and stakeholder groups

  • Design and curate impactful convenings to elevate Capital One's leadership on core business and mission-driven work both inside and outside the beltway

  • Build trusted relationships with third-party stakeholders, including think tanks, non-profits, civic leaders and political influencers to conceptualize, drive and shape communications campaigns and initiatives

  • Cultivate strong relationships with reporters in Washington, D.C. and in regional markets, leveraging media moments and trends to drive key narratives, investments and projects

  • Draft messaging, talking points and rapid response materials on a range of public affairs issues for internal and external audiences

  • Support Government Relations to educate internal stakeholders on emerging policy issues and political trends, and provide updates and strategic counsel on existing issues

  • Leverage Capital One data-driven insights to support the execution of various events, thought leadership opportunities and policymaker education programs

  • Contribute to executive thought leadership programming to elevate key executives' perspectives, influence industry trends and help shape public opinion

  • Stay abreast of evolving trends in the political, policy and national media environment and apply insights to ongoing strategy and execution

  • Work seamlessly as part of a cross-functional team, in an open and collaborative environment

  • Project manage and coordinate events and programs across multiple stakeholders, issue areas and markets

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or military experience

  • At least five years of communications experience

  • At least three years of public affairs experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with or for elected officials, regulatory or administrative agencies, or political campaigns

  • Exceptional written, verbal and presentation skills with proven experience creating creative communication campaigns to advance favorable business, research and policy outcomes

  • Experience building and nurturing relationships with external stakeholders including regional and beltway reporters, think tanks, non-profits, civic organizations, administrative agencies, and other public affairs audiences to drive brand awareness and affinity

  • Solid understanding of and experience developing integrated public affairs campaigns

  • Experience designing, planning and executing high-impact events

  • Understanding of complex legislative issues, research and data impacting the financial services industry to inform proactive and reactive communications strategies

  • Demonstrated experience building and executing thought leadership strategies for key business or political leaders across a variety of communications channels, including earned, internal and paid platforms

  • Client Services experience in a consulting or corporate setting, such as a Public Relations agency, trade association or in-house for a private sector business

  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry such as financial services, tech, energy or healthcare

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $126,700 - $144,600 for Communications Manager Richmond, VA: $115,200 - $131,500 for Communications Manager

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
