About the Job

This position is for a full-time, temporary (one-year) staff research engineer at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota. The employee will work within SAFL's Applied Research and Engineering Team and will be responsible for supporting basic and applied research primarily through designing, constructing, programming, and documenting data acquisition systems. In some instances, these data acquisition systems will involve motion and other types of control. The results of these efforts are comprehensive datasets used by researchers to analyze phenomena in experiments or field sites.

SAFL's Applied Research and Engineering Team is a small team and, as such, some amount of labor, construction, fabrication, etc, is expected for this position.

The employee will work with SAFL Associate Director for Engineering and Facilities, university faculty, and SAFL technical staff and researchers.

Duties broken down by percentage:
40% Researching, designing and fabricating data acquisition systems
40% Programming data acquisition systems and creating associated technical documentation
20% Other duties supporting research

Qualifications

Required:
BS in an engineering discipline OR a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years
Experience with construction and programming of motion control and/or data acquisition.
Interest in participating in an engineering research setting.
Interest in learning new programming languages, as needed
Must be able to work safely in construction, laboratory, and field environments including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs and traversing difficult terrain
Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google suite Apps

Preferred:
Experience in instrumentation/programming related to water resources engineering or fluid mechanics, such as flow measurement, data loggers, telemetry, and environmental sensors.
Demonstrated experience with fabrication or shop tools.
Demonstrated ability to provide concise, robust technical documentation for use in collaboration and ease of maintenance of custom instrumentation systems.
CAD experience and/or strong interest in learning.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $25 -$28 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
