Job Description

WGL - Environmental Specialist, Greenhouse Gas & Air

Washington Gas is seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our team. This role involves developing, evaluating, implementing, and continuously improving cost-effective programs and procedures to ensure compliance with emissions regulations and corporate environmental requirements. Additionally, the specialist will support strategies to minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The position is located at our Springfield, VA office and requires the specialist to work onsite at the Springfield office three days per week and remotely for two days per week. This role also includes participation in a rotating 24/7 on-call responder program.

You Will:

  • Determine environmental compliance requirements, obtain permits, perform regulatory analysis, draft reports, and maintain compliance records.

  • Support multi-department discussions on air and GHG trends to align with company goals and regulations.

  • Support the development and maintenance of metrics for tracking and analysis.

  • Support management of assigned responsibilities, coordination of consultants, monitor project schedules and budgets, and evaluate the work of third-party contractors.

  • Collect data, calculate emissions, and submit GHG and Air Inventories in accordance with requirements.

  • Enhance workflows and processes for better data collection, consistency, quality, and transparency.

  • Support data acquisition, calculation, reporting, and verification of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

  • Schedule and track data collection and reporting processes to ensure timely task completion.

  • Provide environmental guidance to operations and engineering personnel and support compliance programs.

  • Develop and maintain project metrics, prepare reports, and support GHG emissions inventory and mitigation analysis.

  • Provide field-level training, toolbox talks, and on-the-job coaching to enhance worker understanding of EHSS principles and compliance requirements. Reinforce safe behaviors and practices.

  • Support the development and maintenance of project metrics for project tracking/analysis and prepare/deliver reports to all levels of management and stakeholders to measure and explain environmental performance results.

  • Assist with maintaining Environmental Department records, performing research tasks, data mining, and statistical analysis. Develop and maintain databases using MS Excel or SharePoint. Assist in manual and electronic filing, and in the development of our internal Environmental Management System and transformation to SharePoint.

You Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related technical/scientific discipline required.

  • 3+ years of related environmental compliance work experience required.

  • Basic understanding of compliance principles, federal/state regulations, industry standards, and risk mitigation techniques.

  • Exposure to air data gathering or development of GHG inventories preferred.

  • Knowledge of natural gas utility industry operations is an asset.

  • Familiarity with incident investigations, hazard assessments, and training delivery.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, remediation technologies, environmental analytical methods, relevant Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, and industry standards.

  • General knowledge of natural gas industry operations preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, measure, and analyze environmental risks and develop appropriate programs, procedures, and training to manage risks.

  • Must demonstrate adherence to safety values and practices, reinforcing a culture of safety in all aspects of work and ensuring compliance with company safety requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and document detailed data and develop professional-quality reports and presentations.

  • Demonstrated ability to present ideas logically and concisely to diverse audiences at all internal and external levels, both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors, and peers.

  • Demonstrated ability to verbally communicate basic environmental and scientific information concisely and effectively to diverse groups.

  • Proven ability to establish strong working relationships with external and internal customers and regulatory agencies to effectively carry out work responsibilities.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Must possess or obtain 40-hour Hazwoper and professional certifications as required.

We offer a competitive salary range of $78,000 to $113,250 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
