Job Description Summary
The Department of Art & Art History in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in Drawing for a one-year appointment beginning in Fall 2025. This is a full-time position with benefits; salary is commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate will teach in-person a 3/4 course load (or equivalent), which will include foundation and advanced drawing courses for majors and non-majors. Oversight of drawing studio facilities and budget may be included, depending on experience and department needs.
Minimum Qualifications


  • MFA in Studio Art with a concentration in drawing or a closely related field by the appointment start date.
  • Demonstrated record of creative research and exhibition activity.
  • At least one year of college-level teaching experience in drawing as instructor of record.
  • Interest to teach drawing on the foundational and advanced levels to both majors and non-majors (Drawing I and a stacked Advanced Drawing I/II).
  • Ability to oversee Drawing I studio classroom space to accommodate multiple sections of the course with several instructors
  • Evidence of effective teaching at both foundational and advanced undergraduate levels.
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • The candidate must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of appointment and throughout the term of employment.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate research or student exhibitions.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration or contemporary drawing practices in the expanded field.
  • Interest in illustration as a form of drawing practice

The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to legally work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and throughout the proposed term of employment. Excellent communication skills required. Final appointment is contingent upon continued need and funding.
Additional Information: The Department of Art & Art History currently offers two degrees in studio art (B.A. and B.F.A), a minor in studio art, a B.A. degree in Art with a formal option in Art History, and a minor in art history. The Department is a charter member of NASAD and is the oldest fully-accredited art department in the Southeast. It is housed in historic Biggin Hall with north-light studio classrooms and a 3-D Arts Building. The department includes an 800 sq. ft. exhibitions gallery. Students and faculty regularly visit and collaborate with the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, which contains an impressive permanent collection of European and American fine and decorative arts, and hosts a roster of first-rate exhibitions, lectures, films, and special events.
