Responsible for day to day supervision of staff, processes and work flow on the processing floor at multiple processing locations as coordinated with the Manager of Central Processing. Ensures pre-analytical sample integrity and patient safety is maintained by staff. Coordinates communication of processing issues to operations and Central Processing management. Responsible for resolution and/or communication of highly complex patient sample processing and transmission issues as escalated by technical and processing staff.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performing annual performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.
2. Completes documentation of competency and signs off on new employee's probationary period.
3. Conducts and coordinates annual staff competencies as required by CAP
4. Participates in the screening process and evaluation of position applicants.
5. Coordinates scheduling, staffing and emergent coverage needs for all campus locations where processors are staffed
6. Is an active participant in the Central Processing management team facilitating the implementation and communication of the department goals.
7. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions for staff. Resolves grievances, personnel problems, mentors staff and participates in union disciplinary hearings as applicable within position responsibilities.
8. Makes recommendations for items, staff and /or process changes to be included in the budget consideration process. Manages day to day activities to assure financial goals for the laboratory are met.
9. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
10. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
11. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
12. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
13. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
14. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
15. Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
16. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
17. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
18. Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.
19. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

II. Position Qualifications:

Minimum of 3 years' experience in a clinical laboratory or hospital registration area; familiarity with word processing and medical terminology. MLT (ASCP) preferred. Prior supervisory experience and/or two years of demonstrated leadership within a healthcare or laboratory environment required.

Must have proven interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all levels of staff, management and lab clients. Must have solid oral and written communication skills. Must be able to work independently and have the ability to solve clinical laboratory related problems.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a hospital lab environment.
